Here`s another single from Capone-N-Noreaga released in 1996 thru Penalty Recordings. This 6 track single includes 4 songs & 2 instrumentals. While 3 of the 4 songs are from C-N-N`s debut album "War Report", you also get the Iraq Mix of "L.A, L.A." which isn`t featured on the album. In my opinion the song`s not really as good as the version that appears on the album for 2 reasons. The first being that the beat`s not as iLL, while the second`s just the fact that it`s shorter in length & it`s annoyingly edited. Sure the Kuweit Mix (I know it`s spelled incorrectly but that`s how it appears on the CD) is edited as well, but it`s done in a better way with some cool sound effects :)  I never did find out why "L.A, L.A." is edited, so if anyone knows the reasoning behind the decision please feel free to school me. Now for those folks that were under a rock during the whole East/ West Coast beef that was takin` place in the late 1990's "L.A, L.A." was a retaliation joint to the Dogg Pound`s "New York, New York" track which is why the original version of "L.A., L.A." has a beat that`s real similar to the Dogg Pound`s track, check the songs below to hear what I mean...

Now go `head & check out the single, you`ll be glad ya did believe that...

Today I have a lil` somethin` from the late great Notorious B.I.G. a.k.a. Biggie Smalls for y`all to check out. I believe that this is his first single titled "Party & Bullshit" which was released back in 1993 thru Uptown Records, it was also featured on the soundtrack to the film "Who`s The Man?". It contains 5 tracks in total; 3 radio/ edited versions of the track & 2 dirty versions. The first track "Party & Bullshit [Radio]" is probably the better of the 3 radio edits, the reason being that Biggie switched up his lyrics, it`s done on all 3 edited versions but on this one the hook`s not annoyingly edited...

I like the beat behind the "Party & Bullshit [Puffy`s Clean]" version, but the downside is that the hook`s annoyingly edited so it kind of takes away from the track, my opinion of course. The Lord Finesse Remix is definitely a DoPe track, however the clean/ edited version kind of sucks for the same reason that the Puffy`s Clean version blows....the hook`s annoyingly edited, I just don`t see why they didn`t do the same ish they did for the hook on the Radio Version, but that`s just me.....LoL, thankfully they included the dirty version of the Lord Finesse Remix as well as the Album Version so you can peep the rawness in the tracks the way they were intended to be heard, so go `head & check `em out for ya`self...

Label: Uptown Records/ MCA

2. Party & Bullshit [Puffy`s Clean]
3. Party & Bullshit [Lord`s Clean]

Got a nice lil` 12 inch single by Al Tariq, some of y`all may know him as Fashion from his days as a member of The Beatnuts. He left the group shortly after they released their first album because he was lookin` to pursue a solo career. So in 1996 he dropped his solo debut album titled "God Connections" thru Correct Records. The 12 inch that I`m sharing with y`all was released a year later, but both songs on the single are from his debut album...

I believe that his former group The Beatnuts handled the production for these 2 songs, they even make a guest appearance on "Peace Akki". Both songs on this single are bangin`, but my favorite joint is "Think Not"....ya gotta love the beat on that track! The only thing that I`m not feelin` about this 12 inch is how they handle the radio versions of both songs, by simply but annoyingly editing them so the end result is 2 joints that you can`t really enjoy as a listener. In my ears it would just make more sense to rewrite the lyrics so there`s no cussin`, but that`s just my opinion of course....LoL, the dirty versions are the real gems on here so go `head & check `em out for ya`self...

Label: Correct Records
Released: 1997

2. Think Not [Dirty]
3. Peace Akki [Radio] {ft. The Beatnuts}
4. Peace Akki [Dirty] {ft. The Beatnuts}

Re-uPP`d originally posted 01.12.2011...

Today I have some more E-A-Ski for y`all listening pleasure. Sure it`s just a short lil` EP, but it`s pretty DoPe none~the~less. The production was of course handled by both E-A Ski & CMT. Out of the 7 tracks on here there`s actually only 4 songs, the remaining tracks are skits & interludes. The first track "Blast If I Have To" was also featured on the soundtrack to Ice Cube`s CLaSSiC 1995 film "Friday". What`s cool about this version though is that it has a lil` intro to it. In it these two kats plan on jackin` E-A-Ski for his Beamer ridin` on chrome, only thing is that Ski seen `em comin` & he turns the tables around on `em then the song starts...

The second track is a Radio version of "Blast If I Have To", what`s kind of DoPe is that it contains alternate lyrics so it`s not all censored out. I wish more artists would take this route for their Radio versions. The third track "The Interview" features radio vet` Billy Jam & it`s exactly just what it states, a quick 37 second interview. Ski`s pager goes off in the middle of it....LoL, Jam asks him where he`s from, 'East Side Oakland' is his response. Ski also let`s listeners know that he`s been doin` this Rap thang since 1983. The fourth track "When The Smoke Clears" is a nice G`d up joint backed by a thumpin` beat...

"West Coast Rebuttal" is more of an interlude. It`s a lil` funny to me, especially the lil` 'fuck ya` mama' intro to it....LoL, E-A-Ski`s on the "Fuck Ya` Mama Show"& the host asks him how he feels about the whole East Coast/ West Coast thing, he voices his opinion & rides for the West. "O.P.D." is a short skit, the cops pull over E-A-Ski (I`m guessin` it`s him) driving in a green BMW. The pigs are yellin` some racist ish while demanding him to get on the ground, then the skit ends. The final track "Same Ole Nigga" has E-A-Ski speakin` about the jealous haters & doubters...

My boy DiRTy KooL AiD hooked me up with this one so I need to thank him, however I found that the volume of all the tracks was just way too low so I had to adjust the volume on `em. Go `head & check it out, let me know if there`s any problems with the sound...

What`s happening y`all? Hope all you mothers & mothers to be out there had a great & Happy Mother`s Day! I should have posted up that 2Pac "Dear Mama" single today instead of when I did, it would`ve made more sense....LoL, oh well what`s been done is done I guess. Anyway what I have for y`all is a promo CD single by the Fugees that was released back in 1996. This joint was actually featured on the Soundtrack for "When We Were Kings". A documentary about "The Rumble In The Jungle", the 1974 heavyweight championship bout between Muhammad Ali & George Foreman which took place in Zaire...

You see boxing promoter Don King was out to get a rep` in the boxing world, to do so he offered both fighters 5 G`s each for a match against each other. King found a backer for the whole thing in Zaire`s dictator Mobutu Sese Suko & that`s how the event became known as "The Rumble In The Jungle", which is also the title of the promo single by the Fugees that I`m sharing with y`all. The song features A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes & John Forte as well. It`s actually the only Hip Hop track on the entire "When We Were Kings Soundtrack", so I guess that`s why there`s 3 versions of "Rumble In The Jungle"& then the rest of this promo single is quotes from Muhammad Ali which is kind of cool in it`s own right. So there ya have it a lil history behind the title of the song go on & check it out, it`s definitely worth a listen...

Been on a lil` bit of a Bass Music kick for about a week now. Gotta be honest though, when I was younger it really wasn`t my thing. Aside from 2 Live Crew I just couldn`t get into it & I think it was just their X-rated rhymes that caught my attention back then.....LoL, so lately I have been listening to a few more artists from the Bass scene to give the genre another shot. So with this post I`m gon` take it back to the 1-9-9-4 with an album from Dis `N` Dat titled "Bumpin`". At the first glance of the album cover I thought that Dancehall queen Patra started a group.....LoL, bein` a sucker for them braids I decided that I had to borrow the album from my homie TaLL CaN ToMMy just so I could check out the music for myself & well share it with y`all...

Now I don`t know much about this female duo consisting of Tishea & Tenesia Bennett a.k.a. Shea-Shea & Nee-Nee. I believe that they`re sisters & they`re reppin` Atlanta, Georgia. They have a Hip Hop vibe to their music, but their sound`s more Bass or Booty Music oriented. The group was down with the 69 Boyz & 95 South as well as the Quad City DJ`s, some heavy hitters on the Bass scene around the early `90's. Dis `N` Dat`s affiliation with these crews is probably why Jay Ski & CC Lemonhead produced the entire album...

"Party" featuring the 69 Boyz kicks things off, it`s also one of the more popular songs off the album. Following the opening joint is "Whoot, Here It Is" which is apparently an answer back/ reply track to 95 South`s "Whoot, There It Is"....no not Tag Team`s "Whoomp, There It Is" though the hooks on the later 2 joints are very similar.....LoL, "Do Dat Thang" comes up next & is sure to get folks dancin` with it`s catchy beat. "Freak Me Baby" follows & continues the danceable vibe. Featuring the 69 Boyz, 95 South & K-Nock, it`s another joint that was chosen as a single -- I can see why...

The beat on the album`s title track "Bumpin`" features a sample that should be recognizable by most Hip Hop headz, that bein` Slick Rick`s "Children Story". On "Hotel, Motel" Dis `N` Dat flips their lil` version of that famous sayin`, watch ya` men ladies.....LoL, the Ol` School Hip Hop samplin`continues on "Yeah, Just Hit Me", this time around they sample "Planet Rock" for the song`s hook. The album closes with the mellow & chill`D out "Dis `N` Dat" which samples The Isley Brothers` "Groove With You"...

Overall even though it`s running time is just over a half hour the album`s a decent listen, if you`re a fan of Bass Music I`m sure that you`ll DiG this one. Sales~wise it was a failure in comparison to the likes of albums from the 69 Boyz, 95 South or even the Quad City DJ`s, but "Bumpin`" still has some overlooked gems within it so go `head & BuMP it.....LoL

Today I`m takin` it back to 1985 for all y`all `80's babies......LoL, what I`m sharing with y`all this time around is the soundtrack to the film "Krush Groove". Now for those of you that aren`t familiar with the film it`s a story loosely based on the start of the Def Jam record label.....except in the movie the label`s called Krush Groove instead.....LoL, many early Hip Hop artists star in the flick. You get to see a very young LL Cool J, Kurtis Blow, Run DMC, the Fat Boys & even the Beastie Boys to name a few. The plot goes a lil` somethin` like this; manager on the come up Russell Walker has some great artists on his label Krush Groove, Rick (Rubin) handles the production for their records. Run DMC ends up with a BiG hit record, but Russell is a lil` short on ends to press up the records so he hits up a local street hustler for a loan to get things for his label off the ground...

As an added bonus to the film`s plot they add a lil` love story to it by having both Russell & his brother Run (from Run DMC) competiting for singer Sheila E`s heart....awwwwww how sweet.....LoL, Sure the movie may seem kind of corny by today`s standards, but when you really look at it this joint came out years before Eminem`s flick "8 Mile" or even 50 Cent`s "Get Rich Or Die Tryin`"& these movies were loosely based on their story. So you can almost say that "Krush Groove" is sort of like the foundation for this type of Hip Hop film, which is kind of DoPe. Enough about the movie though, let`s talk about the soundtrack now shall we???

It`s kind of short in length clocking in at just over 45 minutes with only 10 tracks, but it`s most certainly worth a listen with it`s nice mix of Hip Hop, R&B, Funk/ Soul, Synth-Pop & Electronic music vibes. Standout cuts for me include LL Cool J`s "I Can`t Live Without My Radio", Kurtis Blow`s "If I Ruled The World"....a joint that would later go on to influence Nas years later in 1996 for his duo with Lauryn Hill. The Fat Boy`s "All You Can Eat" is another great song, it`s also one that comes to my mind for some reason whenever I walk into a Chinese buffet.....LoL, gotta love them kats (R.I.P. Buffy)...

Sheila E`s "Holly Rock" is also a pretty catchy tune that I`m pretty sure will have some folks singing along to the hook. "Krush Groovin`", the final song on the soundtrack is probably the DoPeST of the bunch - a collabo` joint featuring Kurtis Blow, Run DMC, The Fat Boys & even Sheila E. So there ya have it a lil` run down of the soundtrack for ya, if you`re an `80's baby I`m sure this will hold your interest for 3 quarters of an hour anyway . So go` head & check it out & even if you`re not from the `80's it`s definitely an intersting listen...

What`s happenin` y`all? Hope all is well on your side of the tracks. With today`s post I`m gon` be taking y`all back to 1989 with somethin` from Donald-D, the Microphone King. It`s actually his debut album titled "Notorious" which was released thru Epic with production handled by Afrika Islam as well as Donald-D himself while his homie & fellow Rhyme Syndicate member Ice-T executively produced it. Now I`m gon` have to be honest & say that I`m just getting into Donald-D`s music now in 2013.....LoL, yup I have been sleepin` on this kat. Always heard Ice-T BiGG`n him up on his albums & what not, just never had the urge to actively search out the Microphone King`s music. It was actually some requests thru this very blog for this album that made me check for it & you know what I am kind of glad that I gave the album a chance because it`s a decent listen for sure...

I didn`t know much about him, but my homie M@RSuPi@L gave me a lil` rundown on him so I shall pass on the info` that he told me for y`all that aren`t hip to Donald-D (if there`s anything that`s incorrect please feel free to school me!). Apparently his first taste of Hip Hop was as a B-Boy breakin` on the Bronx streets, but he really introduced himself the Hip Hop world as a memeber of the As Salaam Brothers crew along with Easy AD & DJ Rashid. They did a few local house parties & some out door jams. The group didn`t last all that long though, but Donald-D wasn`t about to let that stop his Hip Hop. Not that long after the As Salaam Brothers disbanded he became a member of the Universal Zulu Nation & he also linked up with some other kats to form another group called The Funk Machine...

The Funk Machine was a 6 man crew which consisted of 3 emcees & 3 DJ`s, the memebers were; Donald-D, El Jay, Kid Vicious, DJ Superman, DJ Jazzy Jay & DJ Afrika Islam. While a member of the group Donald-D perfected his microphone skills, one of his strong points was his ability to spit great story~telling rhymes. Then in 1983 DJ Afrika Islam started a radio show on W.H.B.I. called "Zulu Beats" along with DJ Red Alert. Whenever they needed an emcee to rock the mic of course Islam invited his homie Donald-D to spit his story~telling raps. The radio show`s intro was even done by actors Cheech & Chong...

His appearances on the "Zulu Beats" shows got Donald-D enough recognition that eventually the CEO of Vinetertainment Records took notice of D`s talent. He decided to visit the radio station that the show was broadcasting from to meet up with Donald-D to voice his interest in working with him. Shortly after that D hooked up with DJ Chuck Chill Out & the two of them formed the group The B-Boys. As a duo they recorded 3 songs in total; "Two-Three Break", "Rock The House" & "Cuttin` Herbie". After those three records DJ Chuck Chill Out decided to go solo so Donald-D decided to add DJ Master-T & another emcee named Brother-B to the group. Now a trio they recorded the tracks "Stick Up Kid", "Girls' & "Girls Pt. 2". Eventually DJ Master-T decided to leave the group so he was replaced by an old high school friend named DJ Jazzy-G...

Not long after that though their record label felt that they no longer needed The B-Boys on their roster, that`s when Donald-D decided that he was going to go solo & left the group. The first songs that he recorded as a soloist were done in 1987 & they were titled "Outlaw" & "Dope Jam" released on the label Rockin` Hard Records as a 12 inch single. In 1988 he decided to head out to the West Coast & linked up with Ice-T becoming a member of the Ryhme Syndicate. He made his West Coast debut on the Rhyme Syndicate compilation "Comin` Through" on the track titled "The Name Of The Game" which also featured his homie Bronx style Bob...

Finally in 1989 Donald-D signed with Sony Records to record his first solo album titled "Notorious". Like I mentioned before in the beginning of this post his old DJ Afrika Islam handled most of the production, Donald-D helped out while Ice-T was the excutive producer & also makes the only guest appearance on the album, appearing on "Lost In A Freestyle". Overall Donald-D can rip the mic, but I find that he truly shines when he`s flexing the story~telling rhymes. Standout joints for me are; "F.B.I.", the album`s lead single is a track that warns listeners of the dangers of Crack use from every angle...Donald-D`s observations cover the women that become hoes, the children that end up neglected & when it comes to the dealer he even talks about those he sells to like the sports star & the famous & rich & how it affected them.  "Who Got The Gun?", is a great storytelling joint that involves police brutality, currupt cops, shoot-outs, false accusations & of course a missing firearm....LoL

"Armed & Dangerous" is a good track that promotes unity & freedom of speech. "Car Chase", is another storytelling joint...this one involves a bank robbery & the escape that ensues afterwards. "Lost In A Freestyle" is a decent collabo` with his homie Ice-T, it has a nice 'freestyle' type of vibe to it as they pass the mic amongst each other. Overall there`s really only 2 joints on the album that seem a lil` out of place. The first one is "A Letter I`ll Never Send", it seems like a joint that LL Cool J would`ve done. It`s a love song, not a bad one but in comparison to what else is on the album it just doesn`t really fit. The other song is pretty much the complete opposite of "A Letter I`ll Never Send" & this one titled "Just Suck".....LoL, you can tell that Ice-T had a lil` influence on this joint. It`s in the same vein as Ice`s "L.G.B.N.A.F." so you know it`s stacked full of X-rated rhymes. So aside from those 2 songs the rest of the album is pretty solid & fluid, the beats mesh well with content of the tracks. Go `head & check this album  out, I know I slept on this joint. Don`t make the same mistake I did, the album`s well worth the time that you`ll spend listening to it...

What`s up y`all? Today I`m gon` share with y`all somewhat of a hidden gem, it comes in the form of a film from 1988 titled "Tougher Than Leather". It stars Run DMC, Russell Simmons & Rick Rubin, but also has lil` cameos from the Beastie Boys & even Slick Rick. It`s not the iLLeST written movie & probably falls into the B-Movie category, but for a fan of Hip Hop it`s definitely worth at least one viewing. A quick summary of this flick goes a lil` somethin` like this; Run DMC gets signed to a record label run by Vic Ferrante (played by Rick Rubin). Vic`s label`s actually a front, he`s using it to launder his father`s dirty money. Obviously with a label like that some grimy ish was happening behind the scenes & unfortunately for Runny Ray, one of Run DMC`s homies, he happens to see Vic & his boys killing someone so he ends up gettin` murked as well. Run DMC finds out about their boy being murdered & that sends `em on a mission to track down his killer...

I kept the summary pretty basic so I didn`t ruin the movie for ya......LoL, just some ya know it`s in .flv file format which you can view using the VLC Player without an issue. The reason it`s in that format`s real simple, it`s a smaller file size & that allows me to upload it quicker & also allows me to utilize a file sharing host that has a decent download speed. So go head & check it out...

What`s good y`all? Today I`m gon` take things back to 1996 with one of the best, if not the best Canadian Hip Hop compilation to ever be released. What I`m referring to is Beat Factory`s "Rap Essentials Volume One". It`s a compilation of various Canadian artists (though most are reppin` Toronto) consisting of 12 tracks in total & they`re all phat, my opinion of course! The only downside about this compilation in my ears is the fact that a majority of these tracks are edited for some reason or another. Aside from that though every song on here is iLL, there`s not one weak track! It`s definitely more on the underground Hip Hop type of vibe, so if you DiG that kind of style you`re in for a real treat...

The first joint on this comp` "Fitnredi" is by the Rascalz, a trio (Misfit, Red 1 & their DJ Kemo) that`s reppin` Van City (Vancouver for y`all non~Canadians). The track is one of 3 on this compilation that were nominated for Best Rap Recording at the 1997 Juno Awards. Following the opening track is "Boiling Point" by the Concrete Mob, another Canadian Hip Hop trio (Deuce Deuce, Black Jack & producer Scam) but these kats are reppin` T-DoT (Toronto for the uninformed) instead. "Boiling Point" is the joint that really got these kats some shine, especially across the border over in the US. "Learn To Earn" is the third track on this comp`, it`s by production crew Down To Erf (Steely Dan & Wal) & features Mathematik on the mic rockin` the rhymes. All three of these kats are reppin` Toronto. Next up is the second track of the compilation to be nominated for a 1997 Juno Award for Best Rap Recording, a joint by Toronto`s Kardinal Offishall titled "Naughty Dread". Still remember when I first heard it `cuz it`s actually the first song that I had ever heard from Kardi`...

Wio-K`s "Sunlight"...

Takin` the fifth spot on the comp` is Black-I`s "No Lawz", homie reps Toronto well over the militant~type beat. Toronto`s Wio-K follows things up with the DJ X produced "Sunlight" bringin` some Caribbean vibes with a T-DoT twist. The "Who`s Talking Weight [Rmx]" by the duo Redlife (Remey & Action) comes next. It`s a decent track, but honestly I DiG the original much more than the remix. One of this compilation`s iLLeST tracks comes from Toronto`s Dan-E-O, it`s titled "Dear Hip Hop"& is produced by Concrete Mob`s Scam. You could compare this joint to Common`s "I Used To Love H.E.R."& say that it`s almost like the Canadian equivalent, definitely well worth the listen!!!

Here`s the original version of "Who`s Talking Weight?" by Redlife...

Dan-E-O`s "Dear Hip Hop"...

Scales Empire, a duo consisting of Kandu & T-Wyze bring some "Bright Lights Big City" to the table. This joint is the 3rd song of the compilation to be nominated for the Best Rap Recording at the 1997 Juno Awards. The tenth track is one of my fav`s on this comp`, it`s by Toronto`s Choclair & it`s titled "Twenty One Years". This joint is one of the very songs that help Choclair garner some major props in the Hip Hop world. I also believe that this is the song that DJ Premier sampled for Gangstarr`s "You Know My Steez". Citizen Kane, a trio (Aje, Rob Blow & Swinger Spade) reppin` Toronto, contributes the compilation`s second last track titled "Structure, Foundation" produced by Down To Erf. Things come to an ending with "U.L." a track by another trio reppin` the T-DoT Ghetto Concept...

So there ya have it, a lil` run down of the compilation now go `head & check it out for ya`self! You`ll be glad ya did, trust me...

What`s happenin` y`all? I hope that all my American visitors are set to have a great Independence Day, this`ll be the first one that I`m celebrating as a Camerican (Canadian livin` in America :). Anyways I figured that I would share with y`all a documentary that I had originally uploaded while I was still living in Canada back in 2012. The documentary that I`m referring to is titled "Wu: The Story Of The Wu-Tang Clan"& it was released back in 2008. It was directed by Gerald Barclay, what`s interesting to note is that he actually grew up with some of the Wu-Tang Clan members & also worked with the Clan early on in their career directing music videos ("Protect Ya` Neck" for example) so that makes this doc` a lil` more interesting because he takes the viewers on more of a behind the scenes type trip...

Gerald takes the viewers on a brief tour of Shaolin a.k.a. Staten Island to show  us the birth place of the Clan & also covers the classic martial arts flicks that helped inspire the Wu`s ideology. You learn that Wu-Tang actually stands for 'Wise Universal Truth Allah Now God' & that they were originally founded back in 1991 with members; RZA, GZA, Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Masta Killa, Raekwon the Chef, RZA, Inspectah Deck, U-God & the late great (& so very missed in Hip Hop) Ol` Dirty Bastard. Speaking with DJ`s, friends, business associates & even A&R Bon Malone the director documents the Wu-Tang Clan`s rise, fall & rebirth...

I want y`all to actually enjoy the documentary without any spoilers so I won`t give away any more because this joint`s definitely worth watching! So check it out, trust me you`ll be glad that ya did...

What`s the deal y`all? I hope that the week has been good to you so far. Today I`m gon` share with y`all another HeRBaN DeLuXe VeRSioN of an album originally released back in 1997 by The Beatnuts, it`s actually my favorite album from the crew & that album`s titled "Stone Crazy". What`s different about this version of "Stone Crazy" is pretty simple; I added the "Off The Books [Rmx]" from their 1998 Remix EP titled "The Spot"& then I also added some instrumentals & acapellas which came mostly from 12 inch singles. I just felt that the album itself is viciously slept on so I figured that it would be kind of iLL to give it a lil` more interest by including a few extra joints; the instrumentals because well it`s really where The `Nuts truly shine. The acapellas were included because I think that it`s kind of interesting to hear the lil` things in the vocals that you may have missed out on `cuz you were noddin` ya` head to the bangin` beats. The "Off The Books [Rmx]" was included because I figured maybe a few folks may not have heard it, even if it`s not as iLL as the original...

Sure Psycho Les & Ju Ju may not have the iLLeST lyrics, but that doesn`t really matter all that much when you allow your eardrums to take in the amazingly DoPe beats that these kats create. Each track (even the Interludes) has their own unique sound, nothing on the album sounds alike yet the tracks still manage to mesh will together to make one awesome piece of work. The Soul, Funk & even Ragtime samples that the Beatnuts chose to use help birth some pretty original & funky vibes. I don`t really have the time to go over each track individually like I would really like to do so you will just have to trust me when I say that this entire album is a great listen! If you are a fan of head noddin` funky beats you need to listen to this...

The standout joints for me are; "Bless The M.I.C." with it`s grindin` guitars & catchiness, "Here`s A Drink" with it`s staggering drums, "Off The Books" (probably the best track on the album) with the guest stealin` verse from the late great Big Pun & it`s uptempo drums & Sesame Street flute sample, "Do You Believe?" is my favorite track on the album with it`s unmistakeably DoPe beat & it`s serious but iLL hook, "Find That" is another DoPe track with it`s infectious beat even if it`s a lil` on the short side, then there`s "Give Me Tha Ass" a comical X-rated track that flips the same sample that was later used for Will Smith`s "Men In Black" track (you can read a lil` something about how the `Nuts felt about that track using the same sample here). So there ya have it folks now go `head & give it a listen, you`ll be glad that ya did...

This album right here is really for the die~hard Mac (of No Limit Records fame) fans, or for the folks that just like to collect the some~what rare albums. This joint is Mac`s very first album, dropped on Yo! Records way back in 1989 hilariously titled "The Lyrical Midget". That`s right y`all before Mac was known as 'Da Camouflage Assassin' Lil` Mac was 'The Lyrical Midget'. He was 11 years old (possibly 12) spittin` flows mainly written with the help of DJ Mannie Fresh (of Cash Money Records fame), Gregory "D" also helped write the first & last tracks on the album. The beats are credited to 2 Hype Producers, which I think is the duo of both DJ Mannie Fresh & Gregory "D". I could be wrong on that, so if that`s the case don`t hesitate to school me!!!

The album itself isn`t anything ground breaking, c`mon what do ya expect from an 11 or 12 year old anyway? Regardless, I wanted to share it with y`all anyway to shed some light on an artist that I find hasn`t received the props that he should have. It probably has something to do with the fact that he was down with Master P`s No Limit Records, no DiSReSPeCT but that stable really wasn`t known for their lyricists at the time. Or maybe it`s the fact that on September 21, 2001 Mac (born, McKinley J. Phipps Jr.) was convicted of manslaughter charges for the death of 22-year-old Barron C. Victor Jr. That would definitely snuff your lime~light out, actually it would blow the bulb right out on most folks...

Even though he is serving a 30 year prison bid, maintaining his claim of innocence he has dropped an album titled "Mac Presents: The Lost Tapes" which used to be available athttp://www.myspace.com/macphipps. From what I heard it consists of tracks that were unreleased from his days at No Limit Records, but that`s another story for another post...LoL, so go `head & check out Mac`s debut if you`re interested in hearing the beginnings of his career. He may only be a kid on this album, but it shows ya that Mac was a talented individual even at such a young age. It`s a DaMn shame that homie got caught up in that fucked up situation that landed him in prison...

The "Ricky D EP" is a bootleg, just as I suspected....LoL, it was released in 2002 on vinyl thru Archives Inc.. I`m still unsure of the production credits for this, but the obvious one is clearly that the last track "World Renown" was produced by Pete Rock. Anyway that`s all I have for y`all, enjoy the tunes. Here`s a nice lil` previously unreleased album from around 1995 that Prince Paul released thru his Twitter account. Here`s what Prince Paul had to say about it...

Words from Prince Paul about the album:

"This was a project that I wanted to put together with Amityville MC legend Superstar . as I thought about it more I wanted to recruit more Mcs we knew to make it diverse . Superstar already had the name "Horror City" so wen recorded under that name . This project was recorded right after the first Gravedigga album " 6ft deep"in 1995 . I shopped the demo but unfortunately it got looked over and never got signed . I sat on this project for a while but it always had a dear place in my heart because I thought it was really good and the talent was there . I stripped some of the music from the demo and put it on " a prince among thieves" and actually had a few of the guys perform on the " Thieves " album as well but to be honest I always liked these originals better . So now I have decided share these songs with all of you because holding on to them made no sense .. why not share great music . Hopefully you the listener will enjoy this project as much as I do . please share it , thats why I made this for free download . For more group info please log on to http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000981527022 for a proper bio of "Horror City"...

Dust`n off a nice Canadian HiP HoP gem for y`all today, it comes in the form of Toronto emcee Mathematik`s "No Division" released back in 2005. I was diggin` thru a few stacks of my CD`s & found this joint, hadn`t heard it in a while so I threw it in the stereo. It`s still a good listen today, if you`re a fan of some good ol` boom bap type HiP HoP then this album`s definitely for you! With production from his Down To Erf crew as well as some production from the likes of Mr. Attic, DJ Serious & Saukrates, Mathematik catches wreck all over the head~noddin` backdrops provided by these veteran Toronto beat merchants...

"If It Isn`t" opens the album up nicely, Mathematik spits lyrics about his devotion to being an emcee over a boom bapp`n beat seasoned by keys & a nice lil` play on New Edition`s "If It Isn`t Love". That joint right there should give you an idea of what you can expect on this album...pure HiP HoP; rhymes, breakin` & DJ`n. You can also hear Math`s growth as an emcee as he steps out of his comfort~zone tacklin` double~time rhyme patterns on "Who`s Wit` Me?", takin` charge of hypersonic soundscapes on "Attack"& he even takes a shot at sped~up samples on "The Righteous" all without sacrificing his lyrics or soundin` corny. If you`re lookin` to listen to some good ol` HiP HoP with a nice positive & spiritual vibe (no preachin` don`t worry....LoL) to it then look no further. Check it out & enjoy...

Re~uPP`d, originally posted 01.02.2013...

Today I have another joint to share with ya that gets the HeRBaN DeLuXe treatment. That album is Choclair`s debut album released thru Virgin Music back in 1999 titled "Ice Cold" (the American version of the album was released by Priority Records). The reason that I decided to 'enhance' the album by making it an HeRBaN DeLuXe VeRSioN is really simple; "Suave Dirt Dogs" the collabo` with the late & great Ol` Dirty Bastard never made it to the album due to label politics, the US version of the album actually has a track that`s not on the Canadian release; it`s titled "First Thing"& features Rahzel, finally there`s the lil` interludes that were at the end of some tracks, I just did a lil` editing & made `em their own tracks to make listening to the album a much smoother transition from track to track...

To make things a lil` more interesting I made this album a sort of choose your own adventure type thing....LoL, you can listen to the album as it is with tracks 1-23 or you could remove track #22 "Rollin` [Radio]"& replace it with the Rahzel collabo` "First Thing". The reason I suggest the latter is simple really, it`s not the actual 'Radio version' of the track, it`s pretty much the same as the album version with all the cussin` & ish it just has a shorter intro on the track which makes it about a minute shorter in length. Guess they just meant that it was a shorter track so it would fit better into a radio station`s playlist or something, `cuz honestly there`s nothing edited about the track.....LoL

Now for those of you that may not be up on just who Choclair is I`ll do my best to school ya. Choclair, reppin` Scarborough, Ontario (East Toronto) first stepped into the Hip Hop scene in the early 1990's eventually releasing his first 12 inch single "Twenty One Years" by 1995 thru his own independently run label Knee Deep Records. His track is actually on the B-Side of the single, another gem of a track is on the flip side & that track is none other than Saukrates` "Father Time". Two CLaSSiC Canadian Hip Hop tracks isn`t too shabby for a label`s first release. The following year (1996) the label would also go on to release another first, that first was from Kardinal Offishall. Knee Deep Records released his debut single "Naughty Dread" which earned him a Juno Award nomination, but that`s another story all together for another post....LoL, let`s get back to Choclair...

The underground quickly caught on to the emcee`s debut track "Twenty One Years"& it eventually led to other folks taking notice, not just the folks up in Canada either. The legendary DJ Premier even sampled the track for Gang Starr`s "You Know My Steez" (maybe that`s what led to Guru`s appearance on "Bare Witness" who knows?). Clearly Choclair was doin` something right so he continued working on his music & in 1996 he released another 12 inch single "Just A Second b/w What It Takes". Both tracks continued to impress the heads, I`m still a fan of "What It Takes" which also features fellow Circle member Jully Black on the hook. The Circle; a combination of The Figurez Of Speech crew & the Paranormal crew, is basically a collective of artists & producers from Toronto members include; Saukrates, Choclair, Kardinal Offishall, Frankenstein, YLook, Jully Black, Marvel, Solitair, Ro Ro Dolla, Thrust & Tara Chase...

With the success of his first two singles Choclair felt that it only made sense to take the next step, so he decided to release an EP titled "What It Takes" in 1997using his Knee Deep Records label once again. It contained 4 tracks, an Interlude & 5 Instrumentals; 10 tracks in total. The EP did well, after all it did earn Choclair a Juno Award in 1997 for Best Rap Recording. The "What It Takes" music video & the 12 inch single for "What It Takes [Rmx]" helped Choclair`s project get more exposure.

After the EP he continued to release music to keep his name buzzin`. One thing that he did that`s cemented his name in the Canadian Hip Hop History Books is that he landed a feature on the now CLaSSiC collabo` "Northern Touch" along with fellow Canadians the Rascalz, Kardinal Offishall, Checkmate, Thrust. This Hip Hop anthem earned all the artists involved a gold record (sales~wise)...

In 1998 he dropped another 12 inch single "Internal Affairs b/w Silver Surfer". The A-Side of the single "Internal Affairs" is a Choclair joint that also features fellow Circle members Frankenstein, Kardinal Offishall & Marvel, while the B-Side of the single is a Solitair solo joint titled "Silver Surfer". Following that single Knee Deep Records released the "Planet Mars EP", a short compilation of sorts that features joints from Marvel, Solitair & Choclair, Kardinal Offishall (ft. YLook), Nefarious, Frankenstein, Thrust & K-OS. It wasn`t too long after releasing the "Planet Mars EP" that Choclair decided that it was time to expand his team so he joined with Virgin Music Canada & in 1999 he signed with Priority Records so he could release his debut album titled "Ice Cold"...

Once he signed with the major label of course that`s when a lot of heads started hatin` on Choclair, claimin` that he had sold out. So he responded by releasing "Flagrant" as a single in 1999. The track was produced by Saukrates & it`s basically a 'BiG FuCK YoU' to the critics, very DoPe& it`s definitely a great way to shut the haters up. He followed the single up with his debut album "Ice Cold" which mostly featured production from members of The Circle (Saukrates, Kardinal Offishall, Frankenstein& Solitair), but Da Grassroots & K-Cut also had a helpin` hands with the beats. The album was certified Gold in Canada & the album`s hit single "Let`s Ride" featuring Saukrates has been a Summer anthem up in Canada since it`s release. With all that being said let`s get to the album shall we???

The album opens up withsome chick who goes by the name Manal ''Prima'' Hajj (not too sure who she is) babblin`, eventually she warns us not to bootleg the album or "you`ll get bashed"....LoL, tha album`s title track "Ice Cold" let`s the listeners what know what they`re in store for. Da Grassroots do a great job providing an iLL mellow but cool`D out beat for Choclair to flex his shit~talkin`, sexual & all around ice cold lyrics. The Kardinal Offishall produced "Let`s Ride" follows & it features Saukrates on the hook & intro of the track. It`s a great joint for the Summer& gets every BBQ movin`, Little X also did a good job directing the music video...

The first Interlude wasjust taken from the end of the "Let`s Ride" track & made it`s own. Saukrates produced "Rubbin`"& also appears on the hook, this one has Choclair expressin` his love for the ladies with it`s clubbish vibes it`s sure to get a few folks dancing. "Takin` It In" is another joint produced by Saukrates, Choclair targets the fakers & wannabe playas on this one exposin` `em for what they are. On "Bare Witness" Choclair connected with the late & great Guru of Gang Starr over a thumpin` beat produced by Kardinal Offishall with cuts by DJ Tony Touch, most definitely a banger! The second Interlude was just taken from then end of "Bare Witness"& made it`s own track, Choclair just let`s the listeners know that he likes to party & have a good time just as much as the next kat...

"Jambone" is another party~vibed track for the ladies produced by Kardinal Offishall that also features Ro Ro Dolla.Fellow Circle member Solitair steps up toproduce"Fresh", Choclair does what he does best...talks that shit!....LoL, straight braggidious type flows here. After that Kardinal Offishall stops in & drops a quick P.S.A. for the ladies. Speakin` of ladies, Jully Black shows up & gives Choclair a hand on "Rollin`" a joint produced by former Main Source DJ K-Cut. Jay-Z`s protege Memphis Bleek makes a guest appearance on the Solitair produced "Young Gunz", it`s nothing spectacular but it`s far from wack. "Runnin` Wid Us" has Choclair flowin` over a beat produced by Kardinal Offishall who also lends a nice verse to the song. The previously released as a white label single "Flagrant" follows the Kardinal collabo` & as mentioned before it`s produced by Saukrates & it has Choclair clearly addressing his doubters & critics. In my opinion this track is the best on the album, definitely one to BuMP...

The third Interlude was just taken from the end of the "Flagrant" track & made it`s own. On "Die Hard" Choclair reconnects with the Rascalz over a track produced by Solitairwith Saukrates on the hook, a decent West Coast/ East Coast collabo`. "S.O.T." is another Circle collabo` with Choclair sharing the mic with Kardinal Offishall & Solitair, while the beat itself was produced by Solitair. The fourth Interlude was just taken from the end of "S.O.T."& made into its own track. K-Cut provides the bouncy backdrop for"Da Chiznock". Choclair decides to put the partying on pause long enough to drop an iLL storytelling track produce by Frankenstein a.k.a. Frank Fallico on "Situation 9". It`s a great song warning folks about what they`ll get caught up in if they don`t pay attention to who & whatsurrounds them...

"Rollin` [Radio]" is pretty much the same as the previous version of the track on the album, it just has a shorter intro. "Suave Dirt Dogs" features the late & great Ol` Dirty Bastard & Saukrates, it was originally intended to be included on the retail release of "Ice Cold", but for whatever the reason was label politics prevented it from happening. It was released in 2000 however as a white label single, so I just decided to add it to the album like it was initially intended to be. "First Thing" is a collabo` with Rahzel that is only featured on the US release of "Ice Cold" for some reason. So there you have it y`all, go `head & check out the music for ya`self & enjoy...

What`s goin` on y`all? Hope that your Friday`s gon` be good to you! Today I`m going to share with y`all an album that I`ve been listening to all morning since I decided to pull it out of my CD collection & take it back to 1994. The album is titled "Funkdafied" which is Da Brat`s debut album (she`s also the first solo female emcee to go platinum). I still remember bein` a young buck buyin` the cassette from the Music World store at the Billings Bridge mall back when it first dropped. Let`s just say that it got plenty of play in my Sony Walkman...

Now for whatever reason if you don`t happen to know who Da Brat is I will drop a lil` run~down so you get a lil` more familiar. Although you`d think she was reppin` Cali` Da Brat, born Shawntae Harris is actually from Chicago, Illinois. Story goes that she linked up with Jermaine Dupri & his So So Def record label back in 1992 after she had won a local Rap contest that was sponsored by Yo! MTV Raps. The prize was a chance to meet Kris Kross (who at the time were blowin` up with their hit single "Jump"), they in turn introduced her to J.D. who was so impressed by her talent that he signed her to his label. During an interview for the newspaper the Atlanta Journal - Constitution she told the reporter she received her rappin` moniker "Da Brat" because she`s, "a spoiled only child"...

Seein` how Snoop Dogg was blowin` up at the time in the West Coast, J.D. decided to mold Da Brat`s image as 'the female Snoop'. So when he cooked up the beats for her debut it`s no surprise that they are all heavily G-Funk influenced. Don`t get it twisted though, Da Brat is not a Snoop Dogg clone rappin` over some wannabe~Dre beats. Da B-R-A-T comes original & can flow like the winds in the city of Chi, while Jermaine Dupri provides her with some great Funky backdrops to drop her lyrical tornadoes. Production~wise if J.D. has ever cooked up anything DoPeR than these 9 tracks here, I just simply haven`t heard it yet!!!

"Da Shit Ya Can`t Fuc Wit`" has Da Brat flexin` her murderous lyrical skillz. "Fa All Y`all" features Kandi of Xscape fame & it reminds me of somethin` you`d hear at a block party with it`s bouncin` beat gettin` folks up dancin`. "Fire It Up" is a nice smokey~vibed ode to blazin` up some Buddah (it works trust me, smoke a joint to this one). "Funkdafied", which was a #1 Rap Single, is just well that, funkdafied....LoL, what`s not to like about this? "May Da Funk Be Wit` Cha" continues the funky vibe with some DoPe Cali~esque synthesizer work & features Xscape`s LaTocha Scott...

"Ain`t No Thang" features Y-Tee of Da Bush Babees, here Da Brat shows the doubters that she can`t spit with the best of `em. "Come & Get Some" has Da Brat teamin` up with Mac Daddy of Kriss Kross. "Mind Blowin`" has a good & funky beat packed with some G`d up synths (there`s even some organ in there). Da Brat closes things off nicely with the J.D. collabo` "Give It 2 You".It`s got probably one of the best beats on the entire album. So there ya have it, although it`s a tad bit short in length Da Brat`s debut is a banger so go on & check it out for ya`self & fire it up...

What I`m talkin` about is the double EP album that Da Brat released back in 1996 titled "Anuthafunkdafiedtantrum". If you`re a fan of Da B-R-A-T then you quickly caught on to the fact that the title is just a combination of her first 2 album titles ("Funkdafied"& "Anuthatantrum")...

What you get with this joint is a few songs from both previously mentioned albums, however they`re edited for radio play, or "Rated PG" for the church folks as it states on the album`s cover art. You also get a few songs that weren`t included on either "Funkdafied" or "Anuthatantrum"& those tracks are; "Sittin` On Top Of The World Part II", "Funkdafied [DJ Club Mix]", "Fa All Y`all [Rmx]"& "Da B-Side" featuring Biggie. The Biggie & Brat collabo` is also featured on the "Bad Boys Soundtrack", both are the same Radio Versions...

One thing about this album is that they clearly didn`t need to make it double CD`s, it all could`ve fit onto one disc. I get that each CD is an EP, but it would`ve been a lot cheaper for the label......LoL, oh yeah this was released before music sharing blew up on the Interweb so the label had more then a few extra dollar$ to spare. Anyway, the first disc contains clean versions of tracks from Da Brat`s "Anuthtantrum" album, while the second disc contains clean versions of tracks from her "Funkdafied" album. You would think that they would`ve had the order of the discs switched since "Funkdafied" dropped first, but that`s another story...

The first disc sounds like this...."Sittin` On Top Of The World", "Just A Little Bit More"& "Keepin` It Live" are edited by simply muting the cusses, no BeePs here. "Let`s Get High" is edited by added record scratches over the cusses, while the hook is replaced with the sounds of someone takin` a hit of some Weed instead of "We can all get high". Da Brat reworks her lyrics for this version of "Ghetto Love" featuring T-Boz of TLC fame. "Sittin` On Top Of The World Part II" is more like a remix than a sequel. The beat`s decent while the cusses are muted, I wonder if there`s an unedited version of this track out there???

Disc 2 gives us "Funkdafied", "Fa All Y`all", "Mind Blowin`", "Give It 2 You"& "Da B-Side" edited with reworked lyrics. The "Funkdafied [DJ Club Mix]" is pretty good & the "Fa All Y`all [Rmx]" is nice & funky. Out of these 2 CD`s I gotta say that I dig the second one a lot more, mainly because Da Brat took some extra time to rewrite her lyrics so the tracks weren`t annoyingly edited. I wonder why they didn`t choose to do things the same way for the first disc? Anyway you`ve read my lil` thoughts on the album, go `head & check it out...

S`up y`all? Got some what of a rarity for y`all with this post. What I`m sharing is a limited edition CD that Master P`s No Limit Records released back in 1998 exclusively thru Blockbuster Music Stores titled "No Limit Soldier Collection". It was being sold for $3.99 if you bought any other No Limit release, $15.99 if you just wanted to cop it on the solo tip...

Somethin` I found a lil` funny is the fact that they list the Mac & Soulja Slim (R.i.P.) track "Can I Ball?" as being previously unreleased, yet the song is actually on Mac`s "Shell Shocked" album also released in 1998 -- maybe his album dropped shortly after this lil` compilation? Something else to note, this may very well be one of No Limit`s shortest releases (aside from EP`s) at only 11 tracks it`s pretty short by No Limit standards....LoL, so go `head & check it out...
