DMX`s "FLeSH Of My FLeSH BLooD Of My BLooD"...

DiGG`n thru my collection I decided to dust off an album that I honestly didn`t even really know that I had.....LoL, that album my friends would be DMX`s second album entitled "Flesh Of My Flesh Blood Of My Blood", released just a few months after his debut back in 1998. After it dropped I remember DMX havin` all this hype; Hip Hop mags talkin` about how DMX was the first rapper to release two #1 albums on the Billboard Charts in the same year. An impressive feat for anyone -- but back then much like now I still take heed to my favorite HiP HoP group Public Enemy`s words & "Don`t Believe The Hype".....LoL, well I didn`t! That`s why yesterday was my first time listening to "Flesh Of My Flesh Blood Of My Blood", 14 years after it was released....wow, was it really that long ago?....LoL

After listening I can honestly say that the album is pretty much exactly what I thought it would be. Swizz Beatz handles a gang of production on this album, microwavin` up 9 beats compared to the single joint that he did on DMX`s debut. That right there should give you an idea on how things sound....rushed, that or maybe most of these tracks were left~overs from "It`s Dark & Hell Is Hot", who knows for sure???

"Slippin`" is most definitely the iLLesT joint on the album. The music video isn`t that bad either, I found the walls with the arms reachin` out kind of funny.....LoL, anyway there are a few other tracks that I dug, but honestly the list is pretty short.....LoL, "Flesh Of My Flesh..." is a good joint, I think that it would`ve been better suited near the beginning of the album however instead of endin` up as the 3rd song from the album`s finish. The convo` X has with his God on "Ready To Meet Him" is another decent listen. "Blackout", the collabo` with the LOX & Jay-Z is alright, but I sort of expected a lil` more considering the caliber of emcees that are on the track...

For me the rest of it switches back & forth from OK to so~so. The main problem with this album clearly is that it was rushed. I mean it was roughly 7 months between DMX`s debut album & this one. I guess that`s why Swizz Beatz ended up producing so many of the tracks.....LoL, it`s not a horrible album it`s just not as great as all the hype that was surroundin` it at the time of it`s released would lead you to believe.......Chuck D was right.....LoL, anyway check it out for ya`self though, after all this is just my opinion & we all now how that sayin` goes...

DMX`s "The WeiGH iN EP"...

Re~uPP`d, originally 09.18.2012...

I have been listening to a lot of DMX lately, so it`s only right that I share this lil` free EP that he dropped to spark a lil` buzz for his newest album "Undisputed", which is really DoPe by the way. I know that a lot of folks talk ish about X because of all the arrests & so~called drug problems, say what you will. To me though X is one of a dying breed, a real artist. He tells it like it is & he`s not afraid to do so....LoL

On "The Weigh In" you get 6 tracks, an intro & 4 interludes. Production~wise Dr. Dre, Rich Kid, Dame Grease, Niam Son & Wayno handle the beats while DMX invites Big Stan, Snoop Dogg, Andreena Mills & Tyrese to contribute their talents to the EP. After the intro "Where I Wanna Be" kicks things off over Niam Son`s melodic piano~driven beat, X sounds great spittin` them heart~felt bars of human vulnerability. As for Big Stan`s contribution, I gotta say that he sounds kind of like Puffy....LoL, maybe I`m just really high or something though, regardless X kills this joint!!!

Dogs of the world unite on "Shit Don`t Change", Snoop & DMX spit their Life`s philosophies over a beat produced by Dr. Dre that was previously used for Snoop`s "Boss Life". Now X may not like Drake.....LoL, but he does use one of the beats from Drake`s "Comeback Season Mixtape" that Rich Kid produced & that track is "Last Hope" (the original featured fellow Canadian artists Kardinal Offishall & Andreena Mills on the hook - you can peep that song here). Andreena Mills is still on the hook while DMX spit some more of that deep emotional ish, apparently some folks have this track titled as "On The Frontline" (I think "Last Hope" makes more sense so that`s what I labeled it as....LoL)...

Wayno provides a good thumpin` beat on "Where My Dogs At?" for X to spit some of that fiery tough~talkin` shit, short but sweet none~the~less. "That`s My Baby" features Tyrese, obviously this joint has an R&B vibe to it - let`s call this one the 'ladies track'.....LoL, it`s not bad though, the beat`s nice & for some reason when it`s playin` I can`t help but sing the hook.....Ahahahahahaha, anyway the Dame Grease produced "Right Or Wrong" ends things off for this EP & I gotta say that it`s probably the best track of the bunch. It`s nice to hear X collab`N with Dame Grease again, they`ve done some great work together especially on DMX`s debut "It`s Dark & Hell Is Hot". The drums that Dame laces the beat with are sinister in sound while X reaches into himself & spits some of that CLaSSiC Ruff Ryders ish. So there ya have it, go `head & check out the music...

What`s goin` on y`all? Hope all is good. I celebrated another birthday last Friday, gotta say that it feels good to be livin` this wonderful gift called Life. Today I`m gon` share with y`all a lil` something that I started workin` on a week or two ago. It`s not crazy super spectacular or anything like that.....LoL, it`s just Chuck D`s 1996 solo album "Autobiography Of Mistachuck" with a lil` tweakin` done to it. In a nutshell all that I have done is simple really. I just spent a lil` time separating the Intro& the Flip Squad Breaks from the tracks they were a part of to make them individual tracks instead. For example the first Flip Squad Break was originally at the end of "Niggativity....Do I Dare Disturb The Universe?", I just separated it & then made it a new track on it`s own. I also cut out the silence on "Paid" just after the Flip Squad Break from approx. 4:40-9:22 on the original track, then made the hidden joint "The 10 Resentments Of The Industry" it`s own track. After that I added "It`s The Pride" a track Chuck D had featured on the "Pump Ya` Fist" compilation released in 1995. Then I added a few cuts from Chuck D`s "No" 12 inch (thanks to the homie JankZ for the link) to finish up things...

Got a funny lil` story that I feel like sharing with y`all about this Chuck D album. When I first copped it back in 1996 I was listening to it after a long hard day of school.....LoL, ah the good ol` days, anyway I was really tired because I was up late the night before studying for a Science test so I started noddin` off to sleep. Not sure how long I was asleep for, but I was suddenly woken up from my lil` nap by the crazy sounds of Chuck D`s voice on the hidden track...let`s just say it scared the fuck outta me at first `cuz I had it BuMP`n pretty loud on my small lil` Zellers bookshelf stereo...LoL, anyway let`s get to the music shall we? I`ve always been a fan of Public Enemy ever since I first heard `em from the dubbed tape my homie Pablo hooked me up with in elementary school. They`re still my favorite Hip Hop group to this day, so once I first heard about Chuck`s solo joint I just had to check it out...

There`s no denying that Chuck D`s militant vocal tone grabs hold of your attention, so just imagine the knowledge that`s dropped without the comedy relief of Flavor Flav on Chuck`s solo effort. Don`t worry Gary G-Wiz & Eric 'Vietnam' Sadler hit us with some of that iLL Bomb Squad production to keep ish from gettin` to preachy. The album opens up with a fitting sample of a scene from the Spike Lee movie "Clockers". A few of the movie`s characters are talkin` about Hip Hop & how Chuck D isn`t the hardest rapper. Sticky Fingaz (Onyx fame) actually plays the role of Scientific (one of the characters in the movie) who was a part of the previously mentioned discussion in the scene, I wonder if that`s how dude really feels or was it just script?....LoL, following the short lil` Intro comes the album`s first song "Mistachuck". It`s backed by an iLL beat with a sample of Jack Nicholson laughin` crazily as The Joker from the 1989 film "Batman" while Chuck D addresses the doubters...

"To all the critics that had me counted out
To all the cynics I fought & thought they had me figured out
Who opened doors on 32 tours?
From last year`s "Give It Up" goin` back to "You`re Gonna Get Yours"
38 countries in the name of Hip Hop, never stopped
7 continents, attackin` governments
Political rhyme practice, I gave `cause you lack this
Serious sense of time & world geographics..."

Next up is the album`s lead single titled "No", a joint that has Chuck speakin` on everything that was wrong with Hip Hop back in the 9-6. Funny thing is most of the ish that he mentions still rings true today...

"Generation Wrekkked" features another uncredited appearance by Kyle "Ice" Jason (he was also featured on "No"). Here Chuck`s basically letting folks know that unless they change their ways of living they`re only going to keep the cycle of ignorance alive. The slick wordplay on the hook will definitely have you rappin` right along with it ("If I can`t change the people around me, I change the people around me...) "Niggativity...Do I Dare Disturb The Universe?" is a nice track about goin` against the grain. As simplistic as the hook is I`m still DiGG`n it, maybe it`s the head noddin` beat with the organ sample.....LoL, after that track is the first Flip Squad Break. "Free Big Willie" follows the lil` radio show break with it`s funky jazzy~vibed beat it`s sure to get that head bobb`N like $2 hookers on pay~day. Good ol` P.E. affiliate Professor Griff shows up for a lil` interlude & kicks some spoken word/ poetry slam type ish on "Horizontal Heroin"...

After the brief lil` interlude Chuck D is joined by Abnormal, C. Brewzer & Kyle Jason on "Talk Show Created The Fool". A joint where all involved attack the television talk shows of the day for all the negative influences & ignorant behavior that they choose to promote to the masses. The second Flip Squad Break follows, just like the first break it was a part of the previous track so I decided to split it from "Talk Show..."so it was it`s own track. This break has Da Brat (So So Def fame) callin` in to the radio show.......LoL, it`s kinda funny but really only a one time type of funny. Anyway she sounds like she`s was smokin` on some of that really good Green, if she wasn`t stoned when she did that I don`t like Hip Hop....LoL, you gotta share Brat baby...

"Underdog" is a lil` cautionary tale that has Chuck warning his listeners that not everything is what is seems, in both Life & the Hip Hop game. The late, great & legendary Isaac Hayes is featured on "But Can You Kill The Nigger In You?" It`s a song that has both Hayes & D sendin` a message out to the Black men of the world that are livin` foul. Don`t worry The Rhyme Animal puts the preachin` on pause to let us know that he`s still an emcee. On "Endonesia"he collab`s with B-Wyze & Dow Jonz, over a nice funkdafied vibe while all three kats flex some decent punchlines. The third Flip Squad Break follows the rhyme wreckin`. "The Pride" is next, a great uplifting track about Black pride. Some may recognize this track from the "Pump Ya` Fist" compilation that was released in 1995 however the beat isn`t the same as the one from the comp` & that joint was titled "It`s The Pride" (either way both tracks are DoPe, that`s why I added the other joint to this album as well:)...

"Paid" follows & is another collabo` track, this time Chuck invites Kendu (Hyenas In The Desert fame)& Melquan along to kick rhymes. Although it`s not as good as "Endonesia" the track`s beat & scratched in Biggie sample for the hook should keep ya interested long enough to make it thru the song. The fourth & final Flip Squad Break is next, again  it was originally a part of the track before it until I split it for it`s own glory....LoL, then I also removed the almost 5 minutes of silence that followed the lil` radio break to get to the hidden track which I labelled "The 10 Resentments Of The Industry". It`s not an actual song, Chuck D`s just basically talkin` (with his vocals slowed & fucked with to sound like a demon or some ish) about how fucked up the Industry is. It`s a real trip listening to this track off some `Shrooms that`s for sure.....LoL, then again I could say the same `bout E-40. Anyways after the hidden track that`s where the album would normally end, but due to boredom mainly I decided to add a few more joints to the album so it would fill an 80 minute CD...

So the first of the bonus joints if you will is the previously mentioned "It`s The Pride", originally from the 1995 released "Pump Ya` Fist" compilation that features such artists as KRS-One, 2Pac, Fugees & Rakim to name a few. The final four bonus cuts come from Chuck D`s "No" 12 Inch single, gotta BiG uP JankZ for the link on that very much appreciated! The "No [Mr. Elite Part Two Version - Clean]" has the same lyrics as the one on the album, but censored of course & the beat`s a lil` more on the hornier side of things sound~wise. Would love to hear an uncensored version of this! "No! [The Wreck League Massive Remake]" has Chuck D sharing the mic with Kendu of Hyenas In The Desert, Son Slawta Melquan, Dow Jonz, N-Tense, Charlie Brown, Flip & Sharp of Backstabbers, B-Wyze, Outloud of Blahzay Blahzay & Kyle Johnson. As iLL as this joint is it should have been an actual bonus track on the album, my opinion of course. The "No [Revenge Of The Anti-Pimps Acapella]" is just that, an acapella. The last track on this HeRBaN DeLuXe VeRSioN is "No [The Kyle Ice Jason Instr.]" (not The Lyle Ice Jason Instr. as I incorrectly labelled it.....LoL, I blame my big fingers)...

So do ya`self a favor & check out this solo album by Public Enemy`s frontman, I`m sure a lot of headz slept on this when it first dropped. The production that`s provided by the Bomb Squad is stellar for ya` stereo & the messages that Chuck spits over said production is definitely worth the time to listen to. It`s definitely waaaaaaaaaay better than any solo Flavor Flav album could ever even wish to sound like......LoL, that goes without sayin`!  Now I DiG Flav & all but DaMn the one solo album that I heard of his was pretty bad (it`s so bad I forget it`s title)....LoL, let`s just say that it`s not his greatest contribution to Hip Hop. Who knows maybe I`ll post up that album for y`all to check out some day, but for now you have Chuck D`s "Autobiography Of Mistachuck" with some added bonus cuts, enjoy...

What`s poppin` y`all? Got somewhat of a gem, at least to some folks out there -- collectors mainly I`m guessin`. I say this because for some reason it`s goin` for about $92 over at amazon, $125 here& here. It`s kind of funny to me seein` as how I was able to find this at a good ol` pawn shop for the hefty price of $2....LoL, imagine that! Honestly I had no idea it was worth that much, I just grabbed it because I thought the cover art was kind of iLL. I had no idea about who this Cellski kat was, but it didn`t stop me from coppin` this joint.....LoL, after all the price was right. So now I`m goin` to share it with y`all...

From what I can tell about Cellski/ Young Cellski a.k.a. 2-Took is that he reps San Fransisco....Bay Area baby! He`s been rappin` since he was 13-14 years old, back in 1987-88 when he kicked it with Al Eaton up in Al`s studio. That`s where Too $hort was recordin` "Life Is...Too $hort", Cougnut also recorded "I`m Rollin`" there. Too $hort`s actually a really BiG influence on Cellski, just peep what he said during an interview that he did with Thizzler.com;

"It’s funny—he never even knew that he was the biggest influence on my career, period. If it wasn’t for $hort, I never woulda rapped. Everywhere he went, I followed. I was a young nigga, thirteen, fourteen[years old]. I was hustling, got six or seven thousand [dollars] put up, so it was nothing for me to spend forty dollars an hour on studio time back then..."

So only a few years later, in 1992 Cellski recorded his first raps to cassette. He does well movin` 1000 units, earning himself $6000. Forget the drug game, it was clear to him from that moment on that Rap music was going to be his new profession. Even though Al Eaton helped him out a lil` bit when it came to producing the beats, Cellski pretty much taught himself. After all he was loopin` up drum beats on a Sequential TOM (drum machine) at the age of ten. Eventually he dropped his debut album in 1995 titled "Mr. Predicter" on the label Inner City Records...

So that`s all that I know of Cellski, if there`s anything else that I left out please feel free to school me! The album I`m sharin` with y`all, Cellski`s second, is titled "Canadian Bacon & Hash Browns"& it was released in 1998. I`m not a genius here, but I`m guessin` that the album`s title is a reference to Canada`s good ol` Marijuana......LoL, feature~wise you get appearances from Ager-Man (of 3x Krazy fame), U.N.L.V., Dirt Bag, Dirty Dame, San Quinn & Messy Marv -- so you`re definitely gettin` you`re Bay Area dosage. Like previously mentioned, Cellski handles the production on all the tracks while his homie Chess worked the keyboards...

The beats go pretty hard on this joint, definitely suggest BuMP`n this in ya` ride. Bangers for me are; "Cali", "Back Streets", "West Bay ''G''", "Life Is A Gamble", "Coffee Beans" (my fav` joint), "M.M.M"& "Fast Life Livin`". So there ya have it, go `head & check it out for ya`self...

What`s goin` on y`all? Hope all is good with y`all. I`ve been workin` a whole lot of extra hours so unfortunately I haven`t really had the time to post up much here on the blog, my apologies but sometimes Life just gets in the way.....LoL, anyway what I have to share with y`all today is a compilation that C-Style (Dogg Pound fame) put together back in 1998. From what I can tell it was kind of over~looked when it dropped, I mean there`s not too many folks out there that talk about it.....LoL, that`s not a bad thing though, maybe there was low distribution. Who knows? Either way I`m sharing it with y`all now so more folks can hear some of the hidden gems within this lil` compilation featuring plenty artists reppin` California, hence the title "Straight Outta Cali"...

You get some known kats like Kurupt, Daz, Snoop Dogg, MC Eiht, Nate Dogg (R.I.P.), Crooked I, Jayo Felony, Tray Dee, Dresta, Twinz, B-Legit & Soopafly. Then there`s a few folks that I don`t really know anything about like Big Bub, Mr. Tan, Jay Money, Da Low Lifes, G-Money & Legacy to list a few. It`s alright, I really don`t mind compilations featuring artists that I`m not really familiar with though because I won`t have any expectations like I would with an artist that I`ve listened to before, so it kind of leaves a lil` somethin` to anticipate. Just like the artists featured, the production side of things features a nice lil` mixture of known & not~so ~known beat bangers. You have Big Bub, Soopafly, Blaqthoven, Daz, Moe-Z, G. Black, Lil` Beau & L.T. Hutton who all contribute tracks for the compilation...

As for the music, it`s a decent listen especially the tracks from the artists that I`m not familiar with. The "Intro" opens things off with producer Big Bub & Dresta The Gangsta, yes the same Dresta that ran with B.G Knocc-Out & Eazy-E who at one time had beef with Snoop & Tha Dogg Pound, the beef`s obviously now squashed & Dresta mentions that in the bars he kicks -- gotta say that his appearances on this comp` were a nice lil` surprise. On "Black Pussy" he`s joined by the Compton Cyco MC Eiht & Slaughterhouse`s Crooked I over Lil` Beau`s mellowed out ode to sweet Black pussy, how could ya not like it?.....LoL, the "Way Cool Intro" is kinda weak in my opinion.....LoL, it`s just a skit basically with Big Bub & Dresta stoppin` off at a Weed Spot to grab a lil` somethin` that`ll have `em feelin` way cool.....LoL, I`m sure if ya skipped it C-Style wouldn`t be too upset with ya...

Producer Blaqthoven provides a good thumpin` beat for "Way Cool" that includes some nice funky piano keys. It`s the perfect backdrop for Mr. Tan, B-Legit & Crooked I to kick that way cool ish. The Twinz & Tray Dee connect on the next track titled "All Aboard", a dark poundin` beat that includes some well~placed train & train horn samples produced by G. Black. The next track is also produced by G. Black, but it`s a lot more on the mellow`d out G~Funk soundin` side when compared to the previous joint he produced. Either way Kurupt, Tray Dee, Jay Money & Crooked I all show up to flex a lil` testosterone on the hookless "King Pin".  Daz follows up his homie Kurupt`s appearance with the aggressive self produced "Gon` Hurt Somebody"...

The "Ghetto Shit [Interlude]" is skippable after you`ve heard it once, it`s another lil` skit that has C-Style gettin` a call from his girl & she tells him that she crashed his Broam so he calls up Daz for a lift to see what happened....LoL, their actin` is top notch that`s all I gotta say. "Victims Of Reality" is the track that most folks will pick this compilation up for. Why`s that you ask? Well it`s simple really, it`s the track that features Dresta & Nate Dogg (R.I.P.) collab`N together -- finally puttin` all that beef shit behind them over a Big Bub produced beat. "Fo` Damn Sho`" has Soopafly on the solo tip flexin` his bars over a self~produced track...

"Get Ya` Girl Dogg" is a West Coast spin on BDP`s classic "Super Hoe", the track`s produced by Soopafly & it features Snoop Doog, MC Eiht & Jayo Felony. "It`s Goin` Down" is a banger produced by Blaqthoven featuring Jay Money & Da Low Lifes with Tray Dee handlin` the hook. G-Money shows up to handle the only R&B joint on this compilation with "If You Take Me Home" produced by L.T. Hutton...

"Don`t Test Me" is my favorite track on this compilation, Moe-Z provides a nice smoothed~out~but~funky vibe for Tray Dee, Jay Money, Crooked I & Legacy to spit their bars to. Things close off with the Blaqthoven produced "We Gangstas" which features a gang of folks....LoL, most of `em I know nothing about aside from Bo Roc who was a part of the Dove Shack. For featuring a lot of unknown kats it`s a nice lil` posse cut. So that`s my thoughts on this compilation put together by C-Style, go `head & check out for ya`self I`m sure you`ll enjoy it...

I decided to re-up this joint because there had been a whole lot of folks requesting it, so this post is for y`all hope you enjoy & appreciate the links! Anyways for those of you that aren`t familiar with this bootleg it`s another unofficial Slick Rick release similar to the "Ricky D EP", actually most of the tracks from that EP are also on this bootleg. It was released back in 2008 in the UK & contains some rare & unreleased material. The sound quality of some of these joints isn`t the greatest, but that is probably because they came from someone`s basement tapes or maybe they were just poorly mixed from the get~go. Who really knows for sure? There`s not a whole lot of info` out there regarding this release...

Sound quality aside, I will say that this is definitely a must~hear for any Slick Rick fans out there. Standout joints for me are; "Can`t Shake Us [Kenny Dope Mix]", "Women Lose Weight [Alchemist Rmx]", Sleazy Gynacologist", "Trouble [J-Love Rmx]", "It`s A Boy [Large Pro Rmx]"& finally the last track the 1984 "Practice Over At Chill Will`s Crib" for it`s rarity, givin` us a glimpse at some early Ricky D. Goin` back to 1989 with this post for y`all. I was fortunate (or unfortunate depending on how ya look at things) to grab this CD for a mere $3 at a good ol` pawn shop a few weeks ago. The album that I am talkin` about comes from N.W.A.`s black sheep the Arabian Prince & is titled "Brother Arab", it`s his first solo album after leaving N.W.A. Some may not know but he is an original member of N.W.A. & is featured on the album cover (between DJ Yella & Ice Cube) of their "Straight Outta Compton" album. His only feature on that album is "Somethin` 2 Dance 2", which is also the only Electro-Funk styled track. Many fans consider the song to be the weakest track on the entire album, but to each his own. Anyways I don`t know much about him, but I shall share with ya what I do know about the Arabian Prince...

He was raised in Inglewood, California & was first introduced to music production when he visited his father at the local Funk & Soul radio station KACE. As a young buck while still in high school he would make mixtapes that he did while visiting his dad at the radio station. From there he started DJing high school events around Gardena & eventually he went from the schools to the clubs in L.A., gaining some notoriety in the local Electro & Hip Hop scene. He first started out on the Electro tip which was big in L.A. at the time & ended up joining Uncle Jamms Army, a mad famous crew known for their party appearances. Then around 1983-84 he met up with Russ Parr a.k.a. Bobby Jimmy & he later joined him as part of Bobby Jimmy & The Critters...

For those that aren`t up on Bobby Jimmy he was basically doing the same thing as Weird Al Yankovic with the parodies of more famous songs. After working with Bobby Jimmy on the production tip for a few years he was able to release a couple singles ("Strange Life"& "It Ain`t Tough") of his own thru Russ Parr`s Rapsur Records label. While workin` the Electro scene with Bobby J & The Critters Arabian Prince eventually started to become friends with Dr. Dre who was also workin` the scene with the World Class Wreckin` Cru. As time progressed both groups` lime light started to fade, but the two stayed in contact with each. That`s when Dr. Dre started talking to the Arabian Prince about a Rap group that he & former drug dealer Eazy-E were in the midst of starting. The group would later be known as the now famous N.W.A. & once Dr. Dre & DJ Yella left the World Class Wreckin` Cru things really started getting serious for the new group, Prince joined shortly after...

Then I believe that it was in 1987, Dre & Eazy-E gathered up a bunch of their homies for the compilation album titled "N.W.A. & The Posse". It featured such artists as the Fila Fresh Crew (Doc T a.k.a. D.O.C., Fresh K & Dr. Rock), Ron-De-Vu, Rappinstine, Eazy-E & of course N.W.A. The compilation itself was used to help create a buzz for N.W.A. & it did so with such singles as "Boyz-N-The-Hood", "8 Ball", "Dopeman"& "Panic Zone" (even though it`s credited as N.W.A. it`s more of a Arabian Prince solo cut). Something to note about "Panic Zone", it was apparently co~written by Krazy Dee (a Mexican rapper), he originally had the song titled "Hispanic Zone" but  Dr. Dre switched it up to "Panic Zone" because he felt that having 'Hispanic' in it`s title would have them lose out on sales...

Shortly after the release of the compilation in 1988 N.W.A. released the grand~daddy of all 'Gangsta Rap' albums, "Straight Outta Compton"& with the group`s growing popularity Eazy-E picked up Jerry Heller to help coordinate the group`s future plans. Arabian Prince however left the group just a few weeks before "Straight Outta Compton" was released due to management problems. Soon after going solo, Arabian started to work on the album titled "Brother Arab", released in 1989 through Orpheus Records. Compared to his former group`s album "Brother Arab" was much more on the party tip with it`s Electro~Rap & Funk samples...

With that lil` run~down that brings us to the album that I copped for a whole $3, "Brother Arab". I  believe that this version is actually the clean version of the album,  I say this because on "It`s Time To Bone" there`s a record scratch where Arabian Prince would`ve said 'shit'.....LoL, aside from that though I didn`t really notice much else. Still I would like to hear the unedited version of the album, so if anyone has it hook a homie up! Anyways go had & check it out, "She`s Got A Big Posse"& "Situation Critical" are my favorite tracks on here. While "Sound Check" features the same sample that Above The Law would later use for the track "Menace To Society", just a lil` somethin` interesting to note...

What`s happenin` y`all? Hope all is well & Life is treatin` ya good. Today I have another album from Arabian Prince courtesy of the home G~NuT who seen my "Brother Arab" album post & told me that I needed to hear (& share with the blog) the Arabian Prince`s 1993 album titled "Where`s My Bytches?" So BiG props goes out to him, your suggestion & link were very much appreciated. Now let`s get to the music shall we???

For those of you who couldn`t really get into the Electro~Funk~Party vibe of his "Brother Arab" album then this joint should be a lil` more to your liking. It`s definitely more of a Rap album, sure the topics may be a lil` on the repetitive side but it has way more rappin` on it & the beats fall more into the Hip Hop arena. This is actually his second album after "Brother Arab", he had put together a follow up album titled "The Underworld" but EMI shelved it because it was a lil` more on the dark side when compared to "Brother Arab" so instead of taking a risk they got scared & decided not to release it. Here`s what he said about the unreleased album during a lil` interview with HipHopDX.com back in 2008 (peep the rest of the interview here)...

"After N.W.A., I put an album on EMI/Orpheus, the "Brother Arab" album, which had "She`s Got A Big Posse", and stuff like that. It was more party music still uptempo, more club uptempo, not Electro uptempo. Then, after that, I did another album for EMI, called "The Underworld", which was more dark. My sound has always been a dark sound anyway. They were kinda scared of it. It got four or five stars, but they never released it, `cause they were scared. Its still sitting on DAT`s. One day I`m gonna drop that out"...

I`m kind of curious about that unreleased joint, it`ll probably make for an interesting listen but let`s get back to this "Where`s My Bytches?" album. Now I`m sure some of y`all are saying that the Arabian Prince decided to get all 'Gangsta Pimpish' on this joint because he was trying to capitalize off of the whole N.W.A. controversy since his first album after leaving the group didn`t do so well sales~wise, but that`s not the case. Well according to the Arabian Prince the content of the album was very much influenced by a girl that he was dating at the time, here`s what he said about the album (from the previously mentioned interview)...

" I did "Where`s My Bytches?" which was all sexist stuff. I had been in this relationship, man, and this girl pissed me off right in the middle of my album. I was like, Aw man, you gonna piss me off? Here, let me dedicate this to you! [Laughs] but it was still good music though..."

Maybe the chick that was the album`s inspiration is the one on the back cover.....LoL, only the Arabian Prince knows for sure. Anyways if you can look beyond the repetitive topics of sex, bitches & pimpin` the album`s not too shabby at all. What really stands out the most in my opinion is the beats that back up the Prince`s less than stellar lyrics, they really get your speakers thumpin` that`s for sure. So go `head & give it a listen...

All I can say is WHOA!!! Being from Fla and a Miami Bass head from way back, I've been a fan of Marquis and Toomp since the 80's. I guess I first heard Toomp on MC Shy D's album Comin` Correct In '88. But I never knew this album even existed til today. I never knew Marquis and Toomp teamed up. So major, major props for putting me up on this one!!!

Woodysaid...
Oh shit! Can I get a copy of Mr. Big Dick? I wrote Toomp's rhymes, and I haven't heard that song in years. Btw, I'm Tony MF Rock.

Here`s an album I`m sure some folks out there don`t have, it`s a bit on the rare side or so I have been told. Anyway Brother Marquis of 2 Live Crew fame & DJ Toomp of Poison Clan fame made up 2 Nazty & they dropped their only album titled "Indecent Exposure" back in 1993 on Attitude Records. It`s safe to say that fans of Miami Bass or the 2 Live Crew vibe will definitely DiG this joint. With thumpin` beats & raunchy lyrics how could ya go wrong? After all their name`s 2 Nazty what did you expect? Some lyrical murderin`??.....LoL, c`mon now just look at some of the songs` titles; "Pussy Whipped", "Mr. Big Dick"& "Be My Bitch". That should give ya an idea on just what to expect with this album...

The only song on this album that really stands out like a swollen hitch~hiker`s thumb is the single "Can`t Say I Love You", they even released a music video for this track (you can peep it here `cuz I can`t embed it). It`s not a bad song, it just doesn`t really fit in with the rest of the album`s vibe. It has one of those early slow 1990`s R&B love song vibes to it even if it is the opposite of an 'I love you' song if that makes any sense to y`all. Aside from that lil` hiccup thought the rest of the album`s a decent listen on some good speakers `cuz them beats definitely BuMP like pimples on the face of a teenager fresh into puberty...

Brother Marquis gets most of the lime light on the album, but DJ Toomp get 2 instrumental tracks to show off his skills on "Sex Fien`"& "Toomp`s Jam". Something interesting to note is that this album was done a lil` while after 2 Live Crew disbanded, that`s why you hear Brother Marquis state that he was 'fired' from the group because 'they didn`t have love for him' on the "Interview" intro. It`s also probably why it sounds like 2 Nazty`s goin` at Luke on "Be My Bitch". I wonder if Luke ever retaliated? Anyway standout joints for me are; "Don`t Stop", "Pussy Whipped", "Mr. Big Dick", "Somebody Say Ho"& the previously mentioned "Be My Bitch". It`s a decent listen, so go `head & check out the album for ya`self...

To me AZ has always been an emcee that hasn`t received the ReSPeCT that he deserves, especially after he dropped one of the iLLeST introductory verses on "Life`s A Bitch" from Nas` classic debut album "Illmatic" back in 1994. A year later he dropped his debut album titled "Doe Or Die", it didn`t do well sales~wise but to most critics it was a great album. He followed his debut up with the 1998 album titled "Pieces Of A Man" which was pretty much a disappointment. It was on point lyrically, but the beats that were mostly provided by the Trackmasters didn`t really do AZ`s bars justice. Fast~forward 15 years later (& plenty albums both major label & independently released) & even though he`s remained the underdog lyricist he`s still rockin` the mic & is actually workin` on "Doe Or Die 2" the sequel to his debut album. He`s lookin` to cook up a gem of an album too seein` as how this may be his last, so he`s reached out to a good list of producers. Some kats on that list include; L.E.S., DR Period, Pete Rock, Statik Selektah, Buckwild & Baby Paul of Da Beatminerz fame...

To tide his fans over until his 9th studio album "D.O.D. 2" drops he has put together the mixtape that`s hosted by DJ Mr. FX titled "L.O.D.B. (Last Of A Dying Breed)". It features a few new joints, some unreleased joints & plenty of older joints that most of his fans should recognize. After the mixtape`s lil` intro things open up with "We Movin`" which is one of the newer tracks that`s off "D.O.D. 2" produced by Statik Selektah. It`s a solid joint that shows us that AZ hasn`t lost a step lyrically;

"They keep askin` how is his shine lastin`?
I`m too ahead of my time to be a has~been"...

Now I`m not going to review this mixtape track by track because I`m running a lil` short on time, but I will tell ya that between the newer joints, the unreleased joints & the previously released joints you`re definitely in for a good listen so go `head & check it out for ya`self! Oh yeah something to note, the original mixtape had only 21 tracks but the version I posted here has 22 on it. There`s no bonus cuts though, all I did was separate the lil` interlude that was before the "`86 [Rmx]"& made it it`s own track so that way you can get right into the "`86 [Rmx]" without any delays by skipping over the lil` interlude since it`s nothing spectacular anyway. Go on & enjoy...

Ah yes, the very classy H.W.A. better known to the Hip Hop world as Hoes With Attitude...LoL, I kid you not my friends. I can still remember as a teen seeing the cover art for the album & thinkin` to myself,"I`ve just gotta hear this!"....LoL, keep in mind my hormones were doing most of the talkin`. I mean as a horny lil` young buck how could ya not like a cover that features 3 chicks with one of `em rockin` next to nothing showin` her ass turned away from ya only to have each of other 2 chicks palming an ass cheek?.....LoL, CLaSSiC...

Anyways at what can only seem like an attempt to capitalize off of the controversial buzz that N.W.A. was receiving at the time, this female trio was formed in early 1989. The group consisted of members Jazz, Baby Girl & Diva a.k.a. Go-Di. They released their debut album titled "Livin` In A Hoe House" on the indy label Drive-By Records back in 1990, a year after the group was formed. Mostly produced by Dangerous D & Ronnie Vann, the album was driven by the singles "Little Dick"& "Eat This". Unfortunately for the group it didn`t do too well commercially, but they did start to get recognized for their X~Rated raps...

It`s not really all that surprising, but eventually N.W.A. member Eazy-E took notice & scooped them up signing `em to his Ruthless Records label in late 1993 early 1994. H.W.A. dropped their first 12 inch single with Ruthless Records in 1993 titled "All That (Juzt A Little Action)", then a remix 12 inch single for the same track in 1994. They followed up those 2 singles with an EP titled "Az Much Ass Azz U Want" that same year. After that the group released another 12 inch single in 1994 titled "I Ain`t No Lady". Overall the singles & EP weren`t really all that well received & the group disbanded a lil` while after that. Baby Girl went on to release a solo album in 1997 titled "Holla At Me, I`ll Put It On Ya", but as for the other 2 members I have no idea what they`re up to now~a~days...

Their album "Livin` In A Hoe House" is alright, sure it`s nothing ground~breaking but it`s not all that bad really. There`s no punchline rappin` here & obviously there`s a good chunk of X~ratedness, but honestly after seeing the album`s cover you can`t really be too shocked & surprised....LoL, something to note as well is that the CD version includes 3 'bonus' tracks & they are the Tairrie B DiSS track "To Live Or Die", the N.W.A. DiSS track "The Conflict"& then finally "Baller Baller". The cassette version of the album only has 10 tracks; the Pimp Side (Side A) has 5 songs & then the Hoe Side (Side B) has the other 5.
I still find it kind of funny that these girls DiSS`d both N.W.A. & Tairrie B, but somehow still ended up on the same label as those that they were DiSS`n. Anyway, enjoy H.W.A.`s debut it`s a lil` on the rare side I`ve been told...

HeaTHeR B`s "TaKiN` MiNe [HeRBaN DeLuXe VeRSioN]"...

Yes~yes y`all today I`ve got another album for y`all that received the HeRBaN DeLuXe treatment! I reached all the way back to 1996 to give this under~appreciated female emcee`s debut album some much deserved ReSPeCT. The album I`m referring to is from New Jersey`s own Heather B. & is titled "Takin` Mine", originally released thru EMI/ Pendulum Records. At just over 40 minutes in length & only 10 tracks deep her debut offering is somewhat short, much like Da Brat`s "Funkdafied" album -- but for what both these albums lack in length they make up for in DoPe music! Just goes to show you that like the saying goes, sometimes less is more...

Anyways, for those that aren`t familiar with Heather B. let me drop a quick lil` introduction for ya. From what I know she first stepped onto the Hip Hop scene in the early 1990`s thru her connection with Boogie Down Productions, appearing on BDP`s 1990 album "Edutainment" on the long~ass track titled "7 Dee Jays" (it`s just over 9 minutes in length) along with KRS-One, D-Nice, Jamal-Ski, Harmony & Ms.Melodie. She followed that up with an appearance on KRS-One`s H.E.A.L. (Human Education Against Lies) project on the 1991 compilation album "Civilization vs. Technology" on the solo track "Don`t Hold Us Back"...

Then in 1992 thru Elektra she released her first 12 inch single "I Get Wreck" b/w "Get A Job" with production handled by Kenny Parker. It was also around this time that she was cast for the first season of MTV`s Real World (New York), a 'reality' show that focuses on the lives of a group of strangers all living together in a SoHo loft for a few months while cameras film their ups & downs. While on the show Heather B. is shown in the studio working on her debut album which at the time was going to be titled "The System Sucks". I`m not sure if that album ended up being renamed "Takin` Mine" or if there`s some unreleased tracks from those sessions, either way "The System Sucks" never seen a release date...

Fast forward a few years to 1995, Heather B. releases another 12 inch single thru Front Page Entertainment under the moniker Misunderstood titled "The Real Ruff & Rugged" b/w "One To One" produced by KRS-One. She followed up that single with 2 more 12 inches this time released under Heather B. & they were the anti~gun anthem "All Glocks Down"& the grimy & hard "No Doubt (Get Hardcore)" with it`s iLL Biggie sample on the hook, both singles were produced by Kenny Parker. After generating a solid buzz on the mixtape circuit with "All Glocks Down" she released another 12 inch in 1996 produced by Kenny Parker titled "If Headz Only Knew" which eventually became the lead single for her debut album "Takin` Mine"...

I`m guessing that since Heather & Kenny Parker had such good chemistry while working in the studio together that`s the main reason behind Kenny producing 9 of the albums 10 tracks, "Real Niggaz Up" was produced by Da Beatminerz. They do make great music together so I`m not complaining, Kenny provides her with some great backdrops to mesh perfectly with her rugged & raw lyrics. Don`t expect any X~rated sex rhymes on this album `cuz Heather B. presents herself as more of a tomboy flexing a hardcore street style kind of similar to that of the Lady Of Rage, a good example is on the M.O.P. collabo` "My Kinda Nigga"...

Overall out of the 10 joints that are on the album, I can`t really say that any of them are weak. Now obviously some stand out a bit more than others like "All Glocks Down", the heart~felt Hip Hop dedication joint "If Headz Only Knew", the rowdy M.O.P. collabo` joint "My Kinda Nigga"& "No Doubt (Get Hardcore)", but with that being said there`s not one filler track on here. "Takin` Mine" is most definitely a solid debut at least to my ears anyway. Like I mentioned before though I found it to be a lil` on the short side so I decided to make it an HeRBaN DeLuXe VeRSioN by adding a few tracks to it. The bonus joints if you will consist of "Don`t Hold Us Back" from the H.E.A.L. compilation, "7 Dee Jays" off BDP`s "Edutainment" -- I did cut roughly a minute off this joint to make room for the "Tony Touch Freestyle", but y`all don`t really miss out on much anyway. I also included her Misunderstood joint "One To One", my apologies on the sound quality though `cuz it`s ripped from a cassette...

"I Get Wreck"& "Get A Job" from her 1992 12 inch single also make the cut along with the "All Glocks Down [Extended Mix Tape Version]" from the "All Glocks Down" 12 inch. The sequel to her M.O.P. collabo` "My Kinda Nigga Pt. 2" was added which is originally off of M.O.P.`s "First Family 4 Life"album. The last track that I need to mention is "Cloud 9" featuring Ajax which is from a 1997 12 inch single. So there ya have it y`all, all these joints will fit on an 80 minute CD so you shouldn`t have any trouble BuMP`n it in ya ride, enjoy...

Today I have some good ol` ignorant Rap for y`all listening pleasure, this album`s definitely not for the simp~ass suckas. Goin` back to 1991 with this over~looked & under~appreciated joint from New Orleans` own Bustdown, the album`s titled "Nasty Bitch Chapter 1". With a title like that you should have a lil` idea of what`s in store for your ears.....LoL, back in the day if you were a young buck this is the kind of music that you`d need to sneak to listen to `cuz if ya` parents heard the content ish would definitely hit the fan (if your parents were actual parents that is)...

Lookin` at the album`s cover art you can see that this is some doggin` a bitch type shit, hoes ain`t gettin` any love on this one. I mean for starters you have the dog character steppin` on a chick`s head with his Ballys while he`s grabbin` his jock with one hand & in the other he`s holdin` a Zack Morris brick~phone.....LoL, ah the good ol` days. The dog character`s also rockin` a hoody with "ITAS" across the chest, jokingly my boy Zoo Dawg says that it stands for "I Talk All that Shit".....LoL, he could be right who knows? Anyways this album was released thru Luke Records/ Effect Records, with production from Mike Fresh, DJ Toomp & Rodney Terry...

That`s pretty much all that I know about this kat named Bustdown. Now if I were to describe his style for those that haven`t heard this album I guess I would say that he`s got some Slick Rick type storytelling abilities mixed with a lil` Willie D attitude in his lyrics. He clearly holds his tongue for no one, saying pretty much any & everything that you could imagine. Clearly this isn`t something that Ned Flanders would be BuMP`n in his whip while cruising the strip....LoL, but once you get passed the shock value of his lyrics the album`s not all that bad really. Aside from being vulgar Bustdown really has a knack for telling stories & his voice is one that definitely commands respect...

Now let`s discuss the album shall we? At just under 45 minutes in length it`s a lil` on the short side, but Bustdown makes up for it with content. The album`s title track "Nasty Bitch" is probably the joint that most folks know Bustdown for. It`s kind of like Too $hort`s "Freaky Tales", but flipped in a different manor.....when a chick`s "pussy hole smelled like sour cream & onion" you know it`s definitely not in the same lane as $hort Dog`s joint...LoL, "Pop That Thang"  has Bustdown kickin` some lyrics about gettin` the honeys to do just what the title of the track says. Next up is a joint for the shoe lovers....LoL, before Nelly was talkin` about Air Force One`s Bustdown was tellin` folks to "Putcha` Ballys On", remember back when them kicks were the lick?....LoL, oh my have times changed...

"Just Kick-N-It" has Bustdown flexin` his rhymin` skills on the mic with it`s fresh lil` freestyle vibe. "Trick Daddy" is a joint for those kats that like to claim that it ain`t trickin` if ya got it, well Bustdown begs to differ my friend....LoL, "Pissin` Razor Blades" is a cautionary tale about the dangers of goin` raw dawg in them broads, definitely one of them CLaSSiC STD Raps fo` yo` ass. "Was It Worth It?" has Bustdown expressing the thoughts that were heavy on his mind at the time, askin` his fellow brothers if their way of Life was really the right decision...

"Fellas In The `Hood" is a laid~back joint stocked full of braggadicio rhymes, reminds me of the kind of ish you`d hear when you`re kickin` flows with ya` boys on the block. The album closes out with "Dedication" which is a shout~out joint, a DaMn shame though because Bustdown`s giving his shout~outs over a beat that utilizes the same sample that Da Beatminerz used for Black Moon`s hit single "Got Cha Opin". It would`ve been DoPe to hear Bustdown spit over that beat, but hey that`s really the only complaint that I have about the album. Overall I`d give it a solid 3 out of 5, so that ya have it now go `head & give it a listen...

Re~uPP`d, originally posted 01.23.2010...

First off I gotta have a lil` moment of silence for the homie Jsta & his dead blog Back 2 Da OG, the reason being? He`s the kat that originally posted up the album that I`m sharing with y`all today. It`s a DaMn shame that his blog is no longer around because he was a very informative kat when it came to West Coast Hip Hop. So much love & BiG uPs goes out to him wherever he`s at now~a~days, now let me get back to the music that I`m sharing with y`all...

Jennifer Velarde or as the Hip Hop world knows her JV reps Downey, California & she released her debut album in 1994 titled "Nayba`Hood Queen" thru Thump Records. Production was handled by The Baka Boyz, Kid Frost, Tony Alvarez, Chris Gunn & Jon St. James. JV wrote most of her stuff, but Kid Frost did lend a helping hand on 3 of the albums tracks. Aside from that though she pretty much did her own thing when it comes to the lyrics. With that being said though I do have to mention that she doesn`t really spit anything mind~blowin`, she`s not terrible but she`s definitely far from bein` in Remy Ma`s circles....LoL

What really saves the album from being totally passed over is the G-Funk beats that she raps over, the production should manage to hold your attention. The album`s title track is my favorite, maybe it`s because of the lil` Eazy-E sample.....LoL, anyway I find that it`s really the last few tracks that are the ones that standout the most, especially "Slow Down" the collabo` with A.L.T. & Kid Frost (which I mislabeled while tagging the track, I put A.T.L. instead....LoL, my bad). Anyways I do not know any more about JV so if anyone out there does, please feel free to school me. For now, go `head & check out the album if you`re curious...

AZ`s "HeY AZ [PRoMo 12 iNCH]"...

It`s been a while since I posted up a 12 inch single so I figured I`d hit y`all with something from AZ seeing as how I posted up that "L.O.D.B" Mixtape back in October. Gotta BiG uP the homie Dirt Dog for hookin` me up with this lil` promo 12 inch, much appreciated dogg!!!

Now let`s get to the music shall we? First off this is the "Hey AZ" Promo 12 Inch that was released back in 1997. It was actually set to be the lead single off AZ`s second album "Pieces Of A Man" which dropped in 1998, but for whatever reason once the album was released this track wasn`t even featured on it at all. I`m not sure why exactly, maybe the label was disappointed in the initial response that the single received. Only the label & AZ himself know for sure....oh & well maybe Tone & Poke a.k.a. the Trackmasters, after all they did produce the single...

Some of y`all may recognize the beat that the Trackmasters used for this joint, that`s because they sampled the World`s Famous Supreme Team`s "Hey DJ". R&B fans may also recognize the tune as well seeing as how Mariah Carey`s joint "Honey" used it as well. While I`m talkin` about R&B, the female trio Sisters With Voices a.k.a. SWV are featured on "Hey AZ" -- they`re signing the hook wonderfully. You get 5 tracks on this 12 inch & obviously I`m DiGG`n the Dirty Version the most out of the 3 versions of this track...

The only difference that I could hear between the Clean Version& the Alternative Clean Version was that the Alternative was a lil` bit longer of a track, aside from that they sounded pretty much the same to me. The one thing that I have to complain about on this 12 Inch is that the Acapella is the edited version! I`ve always hated when they choose to give you the censored Acapella because to me that just isn`t the true version of the track, but this is only my opinion of course. Anyway go `head & peep the single out for ya`self...

Goin` back to 1997 once again with this post & this time around I`m sharing with y`all the debut album from the 40 Thevz titled "Honor Amongst Thevz" released thru Mercury. Info~wise I don`t know very much about this duo consisting of brothers; Henry Straughter a.k.a. P.S. & Malieek Straughter a.k.a. Leek Ratt. They were down with Coolio that much I do know.....LoL, most of y`all may remember `em from their feature on the Coolio track "C U When U Get There" off the "Nothing To Lose Soundtrack", it`s a decent joint with a nice vibe to it...

P.S. was also featured on "Thought You Knew" off Coolio`s 1994 debut album "It Takes A Thief". The following year in 1995 they made a few appearances on Coolio`s second album "Gangsta`s Paradise" on the tracks ; "Geto Highlites","Exercise Yo` Game"& "Get Up Get Down". They also had the Coolio collabo` "Dial A Jam" on the 1995 soundtrack to the "Jerky Boys" movie & then in 1996 they had a track featured on the "Eddie Soundtrack" titled "Ain`t No Love". Coolio gave `em a few more features on his 1997 album titled "My Soul" on the tracks; "One Mo`", "Throwdown 2000"& the previously mentioned "C U When U Get There". Then in 1999 the 40 Thevz released their second album "Lef 4 Dead" independently on their own label 40 Thevz Records. After that from what I can tell the duo dropped out of Hip Hop`s radar, please correct me if I`m wrong...

As for their debut album, overall it`s a pretty solid listen. With it`s Funk~influenced groovin` bass lines & synthesizer work, the beats are sure to get ya` head noddin`. I wish that I knew who handled the production because most of the beats on here bang hard, they definitely give the speakers in my ride a good thumpin` anyway (peep "Mad Doggin`"). "Honor Amongst Thevz" is not your typical Gangsta Rap album, the Thevz cover a variety of topics definitely going beyond cars, bitches & violence. For example they speak for the youth of today on "Thank God For The Children"& then on "Crazy Love" they cover the topic of folks in love & how crazy it can be...

The Thevz do a good job on their own with this effort, especially since most would think that they would have had Coolio all over the album based on their previous collabo`s. It`s a gesture that`s really appreciated by this listener because it gives the Thevz an opportunity for them to develop their own identity. Sure they do get a feature from their homie on "One For The Money", a cautionary joint about ca$h hungry folks out for self & no one else -- but that`s it, well aside from him being the album`s producer of course...

"Tennis Shoe Pimpin`" may have a lil` familiar sounding beat to some, they interpolate Queen`s "Another One Bites The Dust" with a lil` of the Sugar Hill Gang`s "Rapper`s Delight" thrown into the mix to make it a nice lil` catchy tune. My favorite joint on the album is the laid back "Let My Mind Be Free", the beat just straight compliments their lyrics & puts ya in chillin` mindset. The self motivating "Never Gonna Get Nowhere" has a nice thumpin` beat backin` it while the Thevz talk about the pros of believing in ya`self. Female emcee Malika makes a few guest appearances on the album, three tracks to be exact with one of `em being a CD~only bonus cut. Some of y`all may remember her from her appearances on Coolio`s "Gangsta`s Paradise" album on the tracks "Cruisin`"& "Get Up Get Down", but she`s also worked with Celly Cel, Sleepdank & L.A. Posse...

Her first appearance on the 40 Thevz album comes on "All I Wanna Do", a male~female collabo` about two people down to fuck but at the same time they`re trying to set some ground rules before things jump off. The CD~only bonus joint is just another version of "All I Wanna Do". Malika`s second appearance is on "Group Therapy", a joint that has all three emcees ventin` their skills on the mic. "I Like It" samples the all too familiar song by KC & The Sunshine Band "That`s The Way I Like It", but the Thevz put their lil` G twist on it of course. The only joint on the album that I`m not a huge fan of is The Dramatics collabo` "Fly Away", it`s not really a wack song I just find that it`s a lil` too slow for my liking. So there ya have it y`all, go `head & peep the album for ya`self. Oh yeah & please excuse the mislabeling of the folder....LoL, I have it as Honor Among Thevz, but don`t worry once you unzip it all the files are tagged correctly

Today I have a lil` documentary for y`all to check out about the late & great Big Pun that was released back in 2009. It`s titled "Big Pun: The Legacy"& it was directed by Vlad Yudin & was released thru Vivendi Entertainment clockin` in at roughly 90 minutes in length. Overall I think that it`s a great documentary, Vlad Yudin does an awesome job puttin` this together. I really dug the entire film from the opening montage all the way thru to the conclusion where Vlad documents Big Pun`s final days. It was also iLL hearing from some of the artists that Pun worked with, influenced or both...

Yudin takes the viewers on a 90 minute tour of Big Pun`s Life; from the ups, the downs, the tragedy, the success, his childhood, his hustlin` days, his relationship with his wife Lisa, how he was as a father, to the food addictions & depression. You definitely get a good look at what made Christopher Rios the one that the Hip Hop world knows as Big Pun. You also get a lil` footage that was previously unseen by the public as well as a huge chunk of info` about Pun that most fans probably didn`t know about. Now I don`t want to give away too much about the documentary because I want y`all to actually watch it so I just leave ya with this lil` final thought about it; it`s a great documentary that gives us pretty much a complete 360 degree view of Big Pun, flaws & all. It definitely honors "the first Latin to go platinum"& doesn`t tarnish his legacy at all. Well worth the watch, so go `head & check it out...

I hope y`all had a great Thanksgiving with your families, I sure did. Ate good & spent some quality time with some loved ones. Anyways I have another 12 inch to share with y`all, this one is by Philly emcee Cassidy. Now I`m gon` be honest & state that I haven`t really listened to much of his music, but this song was getting plenty of play when it first dropped back in 2005. So I am a lil` familiar with this tune, actually it reminds me of my cousin Dawson`s son because every time the song came on he`d start to sing the hook which is a Jay-Z sample from "Dirt Off Your Shoulders"...LoL, what a memory! Anyway this 12 inch was released by J Records & is produced by Swizz Beatz. You get 4 tracks in total on this promo single; the Clean or Radio Version, the Dirty or LP Version, the Instrumental (with adlibs unfortunately) & last but not least the Acappella which thankfully is not censored, I always hate when they choose to use the censored version of the track for the acappella to me it`s just stupid. So there y`all have it, go on & give it a listen...

Today I`m hittin` y`all off with another HeRBaN DeLuXe VeRSioN, this time around I`ve decided to dust off the debut album from Canibus which dropped back in 1998 titled "Can-I-Bus". I know some of y`all are asking why?....LoL, especially after he straight up embarrassed himself by trying to battle Dizaster at KOTD that`s alright though. Honestly I will admit to being really disappointed when I first bought this album when it dropped. I mean after hearing Canibus rippin` the mixtape scene & pretty much every guest appearance that he had in 1997 I was kind of expecting some of that raw Hip Hop to show up on his debut, but upon my first listen I didn`t really hear it. The main problem with the album is that the production is kind of weak. I believe that Wyclef had just a lil` too much input on this album, from the beats he supplied to the directions that he decided to take the album. Sure Canibus has some co-production credit on the album, but it`s only on 4 of the 13 tracks (14 if you got the UK release). Both Wyclef & Jerry Wonder just really couldn`t provide the right backdrops to truly complement Canibus` lyrical style & I think that`s probably why a lot of folks dismiss this album as complete & utter shit...

Fifteen years after it`s release I decided to go back to it & give it another listen, this time with a little more of an open mind. Once you get passed the fact that the production is far from grade A the album really isn`t all that bad of a listen. Sure there are some weak moments, but overall "Can-I-Bus" still sounds better than a lot of the music that is being released now~a~days.....LoL, it`s truly Canibus` lyrics that save the album of course. Now let`s get into the album now shall we? The Intro is a lil` on the lame side with `Bis hackin` a computer deleting government files....LoL, luckily it`s only about 70 seconds long. The first actual song on the album "Patriots" is a collabo` with female emcee Free while Fugee member Pras handling the hook duty. Honestly I think that Free outshines `Bis on this song dropping lines like;

..."Specimen with extraterrestrial estrogen
Kick your intestines in, sell your testicles to Mexicans"...

After hearing Free`s verse it makes me ask the question, why didn`t she ever release a solo album? "Get Retarded" was a song that got a lot of play on the college Hip Hop radio shows back in `98. The Salaam Remi produced beat with the Roxanne Shante sample on the hook made it easy for Canibus to flex his lyrics. "Niggonometry" has a nice lil` funky vibe to it with a hook that`s scratched, Jerry Wonder didn`t do too bad with this one. The song itself is kind of like A Tribe Called Quest`s "What" except Canibus flips it more on the mathematical tip. Towards the end of the song there`s even a lil` swipe at LL Cool J....LoL...a sample of some guy says, "Hey I been sittin` here trying to think of what we can do with this here letter L..." Then they scratch in "F-U-C-K"& then the letter L follows & is echoed so it sounds like LL.....LoL, guess that was their way of easing the listeners into the LL Cool J DiSS track "2nd Round K.O." featuring former boxer Mike Tyson...

"2nd Round K.O." is probably the album`s best track, not because of the whole LL DiSS but more so because it`s a song that actually allows that battle hungry/ underground emcee to show his true colors over a beat that`s also one of the album`s better moments production~wise. "What`s Going On?" is an anti gun anthem that has `Bis askin` the knuckle~heads to leave the firearms at home when headin` out for the night. A song that speaks for most of the fans of Hip Hop, you know the ones that aren`t packin` heat but beats instead. Wyclef then decides to follow things up with "I Honor U", one of the album`s weaker moments. I say Wyclef because you can just tell that this joint is all his idea; from it`s lame uninspiring beat to it`s R&B styled hook. You can see that he was attempting to go for radio play with this one, talking about failed relationships from the female`s side of things -- the only problem is that the attempt isn`t all that well executed...

The hippy~vibed "Hype-Nitis" is an ode to Biz Markie`s CLaSSiC song "Vapors" that features Jenny Fujita singing the hook. "How We Roll" has Canibus rippin` his lyrics over a boom~bapp`N beat produced by Clark Kent while Panama P.I. takes on the duty of handling the hook. "Channel Zero" features an uncredited appearance from Mr. Cheeks of the Lost Boyz who can be heard delivering the song`s hook while Canibus spits UFO conspiracy influenced flows over another Clark Kent production. "Let`s Ride" is another one of the album`s weaker tracks, although the beat is pretty lame Canibus still manages to rap well over it. "Buckingham Palace" has Canibus delivering some quality lyrics over a moody~vibed beat, sure the hook`s a lil` simplistic but aside from that this joint is definitely a good listen. "Rip Rock" comes off as a lame attempt at sounding like Run DMC with it`s Rock-n-Roll influenced beat produced by Jerry Wonder, while `Bis sounds a lil` awkward flowin` over the instrumental. This is where the album would end if you had the US or Canadian versions, but if you got your hands on the UK release there`s actually a bonus track on there. The extra song in question is titled "How Come?"& it features Youssou N`Dour & Wyclef, it was originally featured as the third song on the "Bulworth Soundtrack"...

So that`s my thoughts on the original incarnation of the album, now let`s get to the 'bonus cuts' that I decided to add on to the album to give it a lil` extended play. The first song is the "Black Out Remix" of Yvette Michele`s joint "DJ Keep Playin`" featuring both Canibus & Black Rob. I`ve always dug that Yvette Michele song & how can ya go wrong with `Bis & Rob as features? It`s off a 12 inch single if you`re curious. "Group Home Family" was originally featured on the soundtrack to the 1997 film "Sprung", it`s a collabo` joint between Canibus, Panama P.I. & Mr. Cheeks. "Uni-4-Orm" is another collabo` that features Ras Kass, Canibus & Heltah Skeltah that was originally on the soundtrack to the 1996 Hip Hop documentary "Rhyme & Reason". "Seriously" is a Funkmaster Flex produced track that`s from the Flip Squad Allstar DJ`s album released back in 1998 featuring Boe & Villa, two kats who I have never heard of. The "4-3-2-1 Rmx" is off an LL Cool J 12 inch single for that song, figured that I would include the song that started the whole beef between `Bis & LL. I decided to follow that joint up with the original verse that Canibus spit for "4-3-2-1", just wish I had the entire song without any DJ adlibs. The last track on here is a live extended version of "2nd Round K.O." that Canibus performed while he was on Kiss FM London back in 1998. Gotta BiG~uP DJ Step One for that joint, much appreciated homie! Don`t wait any longer, go `head & give the album another listen you may just enjoy it this time around...
